Oh wise bedlamers, and Neverdie

I'm getting a bit fed-up of Bangkok.

I fancy a change. My job now means that I can work from anywhere with an internet connection, so I can pick and choose. But where too? I like beachy places but not tourist masses. I enjoy the quiet life but like the occasional consumption of potentially dangerous levels of alcohol. I don't like sleaze. I'd like somewhere with a friendly expat community, if such a thing exists.

Any suggestions?

Skegness is said to be nice in January

On a serious note Penang is OK if a little dull

It'll have to be somewhere in Thailand. Besides, I found Penang a bit pants. Good food though!

Can't help you with Thailand, but just a short trip away is Vietnam.

Buy a beachfront property here (government owns all the land though) as the tourist expansion has been very good for the past few years. Prices are rising.

It's cold in winter at the top end, wet everywhere in the rainy season, but good (without the sleaze) everywhere.

(Sleaze can be found, if you look hard enough, but nowhere is it in-your-face)

ASEAN citizens get a three-week visa as often as they like, so if missis is Thai, she can have a week or two at home with relatives, three weeks with you, all the year round. Improves life considerably!!

I've always enjoyed Krabi and surroundings. It's much nicer than Phuket in my estimation. Hua Hin is within driving distance of Bangkok and not a bad choice. It continually expands down the coast. But, I much prefer the Andaman Sea side of the penninsula, and the clearer ocean.

Good luck with your choice. I prefer Chiang Mai to everywhere in Thailand, but it's a long haul to the beach areas.

I hadn't thought of Krabi, done Puket already. I find Hua Hin a bit boring!

HB. The only family Mrs' Rakers has is myself and little 'Rakersette. She would also want to work wherever we end up, so she will stay wherever on a permanent basis.

How about the mainland near Samui, Khanom. Close to samui, kpg for the party life if you want it for a night or two but supposed to be really nice. never been myself but I do like the mainland around surat generally so..

my suggestion would be to get a yacht , and just travel around Thailand mooring up to where ever takes your fancy,

you could rent my yacht if you like? ..... will give you a special bedlam rate

I'll take up your offer!!

Assuming of course that the 'special Bedlam rate' is the standard "One case of Leo per week" rate.

Forget the beach. Come to Chiang Mai ^.^ Im biased though, i just Iove it here.

Don't come to Chiang Rai, there's too many Farang here now.

for one case of Leo per week, Boater will offer you a once in a lifetime yachting experience in the below beauty

That's actually a pretty practical craft, Boater. It has all the comforts you need. You can only sit on one chair at a time.

I was going to offer him my boat. It just needs a bit of maintenance.

There's always people hanging around on my other craft.

I'm counting the days my friend, counting the days

Dear rakers, I second Ian's suggest and recommend Krabi.

If you seriously want to get away from crowds head to Nan.

If you like expats, see a doctor.

If you are a really good boy, I will send you a picture of neverdies new home in due course and you can close your eyes and imagine you are there  :jap:

if you have ocean views @ krabi, you may even see me float past occassionally when Im on the way to pick up new sex gimps from one of the islands ;)
