Why America is growing tired of Palin

By Gloria Borger, CNN Senior Political Analyst

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°," "John King, USA" and "State of the

Union."

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • CNN poll shows majority of Americans have unfavorable view of Sarah Palin
  • Gloria Borger says Palin's multi-media appearances are making people tired of her
  • Borger says people don't want to hear a primarily negative message from politicians
  • Some GOP figures are now willing to criticize Palin, Borger says

Washington (CNN) -- OK, you've got Palin fatigue. Not to worry. So does much of the country: The latest CNN poll shows that 56 percent of Americans view her unfavorably.

More damaging, though, is this: Sarah Palin's unfavorable rating among women has gone up 10 points. And 59 percent of those all-important independent voters don't like her -- and that's up a stunning 14 points in just a few months.

You might argue it's because of the debate surrounding the Tucson shootings -- specifically, Palin's tone-deaf response to the unfair charges that she was somehow responsible for a deranged shooter's state of mind. And that could well be part of it. But there's more: She's completely overstayed her welcome.

We've watched her morph from the hockey mom into a multi-media extravaganza that knocks on our door every day to sell something, without any invitation.

When Sarah Palin was air-dropped onto the national scene, she was just what the GOP ordered. Republicans were looking for something new to cheer about. In Palin, they found it -- along with a reason to support John McCain. McCain's views on certain issues were, well, complex. Palin's were not. She was a burst of energy, a breath of fresh air, a new flame (pick your cliché) that attracted new supporters for a troubled campaign.

McCain lost, but Palin won.

I'm not a fan of Palin, but this is what Dick Morris had to say.

THE PERILS OF PALIN

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on DickMorris.com on January 19, 2011

After Tucson shootings, Sarah Palin's unfavorable rating in the CNN poll rose from 49% before the midterm elections to 56% now. It was not the left wing charges that Sarah Palin had somehow incited the Tucson shooter by her aggressive political rhetoric that did her damage. Polls show that voters discounted these statements and even Congressman Giffords' husband has made clear that there was no political motive involved. It was Palin's response to these attacks that got her in trouble. Her highly publicized accusation that the criticism was a "blood libel," turned voters off. As sincere admirers of hers', we hope she learns a lesson from this exchange.

The lesson is simply this: She should not become a battering ram hammering at liberal critics - getting down into the mud with them - answering every attack, no matter how low, personal, or undeserved it is. She is a potential candidate for the Republican Party. As such, she needs to keep her own head unbloodied and intact. Battering rams don't find that easy to do.

The left plays Sarah like a fiddle. They pile on with totally outrageous attacks aiming at her personal life, her children, her family, and - now - linking her to murder. These disgraceful attacks do not score points with the voters. In fact, they tend to trigger a sympathetic feeling toward Sarah when they are leveled. But, for some reason, Palin feels constrained to answer them, to reply, to tell her side of the story (aka the truth)

The result of the exchange is that both sides lose: her attackers and Palin herself both suffer. But the attackers aren't running for anything. They just go on to the next attack. They are after ratings and circulation not votes and the more sensational their accusations and the more vulnerable the target, the better. But Palin has an image to protect and when she is hurt in these exchanges, it matters politically.

Palin's basic point was, as usual, sound. These killings were the act of an evil madman not anything related to our political dialogue. But this sensible point got buried and many voters looked at the "blood libel" statement as self-indulgent and thin-skinned. To them, Palin seemed to be the one using the murders to besmirch her enemies, even though she was only answering their charges. Critics charged that she looked more concerned about her defending own personal reputation from the attacks than with the national tragedy that had just taken place.

The point is that Palin should not and cannot answer. She needs to rise above the attacks. If she is going to run for president, she needs to be presidential. She can't descend to the level of her critics. She needs to do what makes her look good - fighting for less government and conservative causes, not what makes her look bad - fighting with her enemies.

If Palin took the high road - as Obama did - and decry the violence into our society and stick to condemning the killings, she would not have been hurt by the liberal charges. But, by answering, she exposed herself and got hurt.

Next time, we hope she learns her lesson. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Gloria Borger is simply another part of that 90% of media journalists that believe everything the liberal philosophy espouses. She loves Obama and hates Palin. She's Dan Rather in a dress.

Perhaps if she knew the simple word "pundit" and hadn't done a Bushism by mispronouncing it, she would have done even better.

Ho Hum. :sleepy:

It's reverse psychology Chuck, this is aimed directly at the Republican party faithful who's opinion of Ms P may be slipping a little.

The corporate media turns one of their "liberal" journalists loose on her and the right close ranks around her.

I am pretty much a liberal through and through, except for a little stream of conservativeness. I grew up with conservatives and they were good people; caring people and well-grounded people. When I get too left wing, I remember them and how even though I don't agree with them politically, they never wished for anything bad for the country or their fellow citizens.

When Palin came on the scene, she kind of scared me. Her conservativeness struck a cord in me. A cord I didn't like. That quickly faded because hers seems to be rooted in ignorance and self-interest. Her speaking in front of turkeys being slaughtered was callous and course. Her shooting the caribou was mean-spirited. It wasn't for food.

Since that time, I have watched this bubbly, breath of fresh air, turn as stale as a smoked-filled room. She is repetitive stupidity in action.

I don't watch TV and don't read too many articles of a political nature online. Still, I've heard of this woman and during the past presidential election even YouTubed a video of some speech she made. That was enough for me to see that she is pretty much an idiot and if she has any fan base at all it would have to have been through media invention. it looks like it is now the media's time to take away what they had bequeathed on this dolt previously. Next!

Why America is growing tired of Palin

By Gloria Borger, CNN Senior Political Analyst

America is growing tired of her but CNN and other media outlets still run stories like this to boost their ratings.

If the Left ignored her she would fade away. But they believe the more she is heard the more she hurts the Republicans so they keep her out there as much as possible. Sort of like tying a microphone around Nancy Pelosi's neck.

So what's wrong with emphasising her faults and discrediting her party? The truth hurts, but it is still the truth.

What "truth" are you talking about to be precise? I'm guessing you'll have to use google before replying seeing as how you're not American and I'm sure you don't follow Palin.

I wouldn't vote for her if she ran for President. But she isn't as dumb as the left-leaning MSM makes her out to be. That's been their M.O. for decades. Gerald Ford was a bumbler who couldn't walk straight, Reagan was just a dumb B-movie actor (and former successful Governor of California), they couldn't pull that on George Bush Sr with his credentials so they went after his VP, Dan Quayle then finally Bush 43. All just so happen to be idiots. Dems on the other had are given a different treatment - Carter was a nuclear scientist of some kind since he served on a nuclear submarine, Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and Obama is just flat out brilliant. Carter - a peanut farmer from Georgia in the Deep South, Clinton was/is a womanizing redneck who drove an El Camino with a carpeted in the back and Obama walks into windows at the White House and can't speak to 6th graders without a teleprompter.. Imagine how they would have been treated if he were Republicans? Like Sarah Palin.

I'm not a Palin fan either, but you are correct about the left trying to use this tactic on practically every Republican. It becomes a little too obvious after a while.

You think so?

Remember when she was asked which newspapers/magazines she read...?

Or about foreign countries ?

Maybe she's not as dumb when it comes to local issues but outside America she's considered quite a non-intellectual politician with a very limited know-how about the rest of the world. If someone like her would like to run for President she surely needs a lot more education.

But, she's certainly street smart.

I remember that many quotes attributed to her were actually from Tina Fey doing her Saturday Night Live skits. Ironic that some people use those to show how stupid Palin is.

So what if she's a non-intellectual? That doesn't make her dumb. "Intellectuals" got the world into the biggest financial crisis in history and never saw it coming (cue the Ron Paul videos). Or the intellectuals working from the White House right now? Or how about the Sec of State, Hillary presenting a "reset" button to her Russian counterpart except that the Russian word wasn't translated as "reset" but "over-charge"? dam_n fine intellectuals out that one together. The list of screw-up intellectuals is endless and not only from the US of A.

In short, being an intellectual isn't a necessary requirement for leadership. It might even get in the way. That's been painfully obvious over the past two years. Ol' Jed Clampett wasn't an intellectual but I bet he could make better decisions than most of our leaders.

Again, I wouldn't vote for her. Too folksy which doesn't even sound authentic anyway. I'd prefer someone more serious - like Barbara Bachman.

Forgetting Sarah Palin

Love Sarah Palin or hate her, you can't ignore her - or can you? A Washington Post journalist calls for a Palin-free month

post-13995-0-76289600-1295811888_thumb.j Sarah Palin and the media: enough is enough? Photograph: AP

It's journalism at its most post-modern: a writer for the Washington Post, concerned at the number of articles he has written about Sarah Palin, writes another article explaining how he's going to have a month-long moratorium from writing articles about Sarah Palin.

Dana Milbank, a politics columnist for the Washington Post, announced on Friday that he was declaring February to be a Sarah Palin-free zone. After admitting "I can no longer hide the truth. I have a Sarah Palin problem," Milbank writes:

I hereby pledge that, beginning on Feb 1, 2011, I will not mention Sarah Palin - in print, online or on television - for one month. Furthermore, I call on others in the news media to join me in this pledge of a Palin-free February. With enough support, I believe we may even be able to extend the moratorium beyond one month, but we are up against a powerful compulsion, and we must take this struggle day by day.

Palin is an international laughing stock and embodofies so many stereo-typical views other countries hold on America and American people.

Her comments on Russia were priceless and the newspaper thing were hilarious.

Dubbya has gone, she is doing a great job of drawing ridicule to the yooo esss offay in his absence.

But you still can't beat Phil the Greek biggrin.gif

Had to do with her lack of credential concerning foreign policy I believe.....

The actual conversations was....

We have to refer you to an interview with ABC's Charles Gibson -- we give you Gibson's question and Palin's answer:

GIBSON: "What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?"

PALIN: "They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

Sort of like me saying I can see the moon from my house so I am qualified to be an astronaut

A stupid answer to a stupid question. How would Russia's geographic closeness to Alaska give her special insight into Russia's actions?

btw - Obama didn't have any foreign policy knowledge either and he was running for the top job, not the position of head ribbon cutter like Palin.

Too lazy & uninterested to look it up but...If memory serves me...the stupid question was in response to a stupid comment Palin made about Russia's proximity to Alaska

I also do not disagree with Obama being just as useless as Palin...or Bush for that matter

Tiny Arkansas is quiet a bit bigger than either Ireland or Scotland and has a GDP about the same as Pakistan and larger than NZ, the Philippines or Singapore. Hot Springs Arkansas is where Bill was raised. It is a little town outside of Little Rock that mobsters like Al Capone built villas in for the treatment of syphilis. They took the baths to steam the mercury out of their systems from the treatment of the disease. The old tubs in the hot springs are gray up to the water line from the steamed out mercury. Hot Springs also had as many hookers as early Pattaya and gambling abounded. I used to go there when I was a kid. Fun place. Hot springs, mobsters, hookers, horse racing, casino gambling and a moderate climate. What more could a young man ask for.

Much like Thailand with a Southern accent and really good horse racing. Arkansas races quarter horses but at Hot Springs they raced thoroughbreds. The season is from January to April (55 days of racing).

Not as many hookers now as when I was a kid which is probably why Bill left. When Bill had the State Police unload the drugs at Mena Arkansas they all used to party at Hot springs. You all remember Mena Arkansas that was the Iran Contra something or other it's what got Bill the nomination for the Presidency. But that is a whole other story.

I'm afraid you missed the point...and sequence (Naam's joke) in the posts, above...;)

Not really I just wanted to talk about Hot Springs Arkansas which is more interesting than, Bush, Palin or Clinton. Hot Springs used to be the Pattaya of the South, I actually sat in and had a bath in the same tub as Al Capone. I would still be there if it wasn't for my nutty wife number two. Not in the bath tub but in Hot Springs.

Mena Arkansas? Bill Clinton? I had to google it...

As usual, only half the story..

A number of allegations have been written about and several local, state, and federal investigations have taken place related to the notion of Mena as a drop point in large scale cocaine trafficking beginning in the latter part of the 1980s. The topic has received a large degree of its coverage due to the alleged knowledge, participation and/or coverup involvement of figures as powerful and infamous as future presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, as well future Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Saline County prosecutor Dan Harmon, who was convicted of numerous felonies including drug and racketeering charges in 1997.
