Wiring Speaker + And -

Recommended Posts

I want to wire some tweeter to medium range speaker.

I bought the capacitors to protect them.

On the medium range I have the markings for + and -

On the tweeter I have just 3 pins, 1 seem to be without function, but which is + which -?

Any way to find out?

with a sound test?

Is it really important?

The way I usually determine what is + / - on a speaker is:

Connect a cable to each terminal - connect 1 cable to the - of they battery

and then "tap" the other cable to the + end of the battery, and notice in

what direction the tweeter membrane goes - if it goes inward the cable connected

to the - on the battery is + and if it moves outward, then it's opposite.

Might be hard to determine though.

And yes - if you change the phase on a tweeter, you might get very unexpected results.

and if both aren't connected the same way you might get some sound cancellation resulting

in bad sound.

By the way, can't you find the tweeter on the internet to get the info required???

The actual connection polarity of a speaker is unimportant, but correct phasing is very important, particularly on bass drivers where out-of-phase speakers will lead to a very woolly sound.

Phasing of like units is vital but phasing between the tweeters and bass drivers is of no consequence.

You can reasonably assume that all units of the same type are the same polarity so just hook them all up identically.

JackA: Normal 1.5 Volt battery?

I found the tweeter (have 20 of them) on the internet, but no information there, too.

Crossy: I have medium range speaker which go up to 7000 Hz and I want to put a tweeter parallel (with capacitor that limits it to 4000+ Hz) The Tweeter will be direct beside the other speaker. I worry if they are wired wrong it cancel itself out.

No bass speaker. (It is for attracting swiftlets (spelling??), they don't need bass)
