Christchurch Earthquake

Featured Replies

I just heard from a Kiwi friend that Christchurch got hit again. This time there was at least one death and many injuries, and with many buildings down. I hope all our Kiwi friends here are okay.

Yeah its a bit more serious than that Ian, reports over 100 still trapped, 9 hours after the quake & 65 confirmed deaths.

Has anyone heard from the thai visa kiwi connection?

Bugger

Hope all are well..............

We didn't feel any tremors in Auckland. It's ghastly in Christchurch though.

Check on my "New ZealandsTurn" post for links.

^Yeah, Ive got heaps of news ops to look at, I was just checkin u didnt have ur skinny little arse pegged under a building somewhere. I only knew that you were a sheep shagger, didnt know where abouts on the tiny island you were located.

all is well, THANK GOODNESS wink.gif

Harky is okay too, I believe he was busy rubbing himself into a frenzy far from where the earthquake struck....which is errr good (unless you had to watch him on the rub that is) laugh.gif

Harky blames the quake on UG and Chuckd ( he may be right ).

I originally heard about it from a friend in NZ a short while after it happened. I didn't have time to comment because I was catching a bus to Burma an hour later. I just got back and have heard all the updates. Although it wasn't as strong as the earthquake in September it is FAR worse as far as damage and deaths are concerned. The center of that beautiful city is being evacuated. The last I heard was there are over 80 confirmed deaths. There were none last September.

This is in the heart of Christchurch. It is (was ?) a truly beautiful city and similar in many ways to Victoria on my own Vancouver Isle.

So hard to empathise with the local people.

A number of pix showing Sumner, which is closer to the epicentre.

SHOCKING.

Thanks for the link.

A day after the Luftwaffe bin over,

Blitz time.

Disaster victim identification teams from Thailand last night joined the operation, Civil Defence said.

After the tsunami job, I would reckon they would be most experienced.

Crushed bodies mite be different to drowning victims.

Whatever, all appreciated.

A Kiwi friend of mine (fellow angler) is a policeman from a small town on the north coast of South Island. He's been on the scene for a week and as been too busy to post any information. He just sent me these before and after shots...

I've been in a lot of big earthquakes, 1964 Alaskan, Loma Prieta, Landers, Northridge, etc, but that's some of the worst devastation I've seen in such a lo9calized area. So devastating in fact that my first thought was to wonder about building codes, but I can see that many of the buildings demolished were of pretty great scantlings. Liquefaction I guess. Tragic, yes.

No I don't. You'd have to be quite clever to build the earthquake weapon that the US tested on Iran and Pakistan a while back.

We have no beef with Christchurch. If it only hit one specific room in Auckland, his latest wild conspiracy theory might actually make some sense. :D

Confirmed dead now - 160. Expected to reach a final toll of 240. Some bodies will never be accounted for because of pulverisation.

Christchurch CBD will be closed until Xmas, and it will probably take 15 years to totally rebuilt the city.

:(

I have been lucky enough to travel round the world a few times. Hand on heart, the country around Christchurch is the closest I have been to my idea of heaven. I trust it will be rebuilt stronger than before and the people lost will never be forgotten...........Which ever God you worship, prey he , she, it, looks after the departed. Tragic.

I tell you what, church's are dangerous places in earthqakes, cripes!
