Rock Wool / Owens Corning Or Similar Insulation Materials

Hi guys,

I'm looking for insulation materials with very good acoustic absorbtion properties for use in my home studio to improve room acoustics. I intend to make my own bass and broadband traps, so I need a suitable material for the filling.

Ideally I want a fluffy fibreglass product such as Owens Corning R-30, or a stone fibre product such as Roxul Safe'n'Sound.

I've already contacted Owens Corning in HK and they don't have a distributor in Thailand, and are unwilling to ship here to a private individual. Also Rockwool don't operate anywhere in Asia. There are Australian manufacturers with equivalent products, however as yet I haven't made any specific enquiries to these companies.

As a last resort there are companies in the US who would be willing to ship the required materials to Thailand, but obviously I'd ideally like to source the materials locally if at all possible.

I've got rockwool spec'd in the drawings for my house...I've been waiting to see what the contractor comes up with when we get to those details. But waiting in the wings I have catalogs from:

Homatherm: Natural Insulation 2009 Co. Ltd

(Though I don't see the product on their website http://www.coolorcosythai.com, it appears to be the same as this http://www.homatherm.com/uk/products-new/flexible-insulation-batts/flexclR.html)

Microtone: Microfiber industries Limites

(This looks like kinda like densified fiberglass batt insulation, they market it as a noise control product http://microfiber.co.th/images/microfiber_eng/page_product_tone.php)

I haven't had any contact with the companies other than running across them at one of the architect/builder shows in town. I'll be interested to hear about what you find out and where you end up.

Believe Microfiber was the first company offering local made fiberglass (many years ago) and suspect they are still the industry leader.

A couple of cautions.

You don't make many of your intended details clear re. the composite makeup of the wall / traps. If the fiber material is behind a rigid impervious layer such as wallboard, it will do very little, is any, sound absorption because the acoustic pressure wave never reaches to fiber material.

If the fiber material is exposed to the room .. it could be a very "itchy" environment. Putting the fiber inside poly or mylar "bags" (of .5 mil to 1 mil thickness) can prevent all sorts of problems with fiber particles floating around the room. And prevent the fiber from collecting dust. The "bagged" material can then be mounted behind a perforated rigid sheet of some sort.

The "bagging" should not adhere to the fiber material. The plastic skin will shift the absorption curve somewhat, usually toward the lower octave bands.

Open cell foam will eliminate the fiber shedding problem, but dust can still be a problem. And if the foam is not fire rated, well ..

If you decide to go with foam, consider "convoluted" sheets. The convolution mounds tend to act like mini acoustic wedges.

Be careful about claims that combine sound reduction in dba and %. The "db" (decibels) scale is logrithmic. IIRC, 50 % reduction is a whopping 3 db.

From the website rerenced, if one goes by the Google translation,

It takes a helluva good panel design to get a 70 dba reduction, and that panel needs more than fiber.

I'm wondering if anyone had any experiences to share of using these companies listed above ? I desperately need to build some basstraps and am looking for a supplier of an equivalent to OC-705 or RWA45 ?
