I think you underestimate them by calling them "moderately" intelligent. most of the family work in law.

Hmmmm....granted some lawyers are certainly intelligent, but I don't think a law degree neccessarily denotes great intelligence. I can think of one lawyer who shows only average to moderate intelligence.

Possibly, but one has to consider the fact that he is FAR more intelligent than anyone taking a swipe at him in this thread. :whistling:

Yet, than we might have to decipher what is considered intelligence. One could be formally educated with a scholarly presence about themselves but clearly haven't any decent and clear intuitive and instinctive connections, certainly they deductive reasonings have been muddled and fabricated from convention. This isn't always intelligence.

You are talking about common sense, not intelligence.

Yet, "common" sense and logic is as diverse as the emotions and thought from which it derives. There are no such standards. We could even throw ethical and moral intelligence into the mix.

?? To whom are you referring? You seem to have someone that we all know in mind....and whoever it is, you seem to also concede that his only redemeeming factor is that he is smarter than me....assuming I was referring to the same moderately intelligent person that you are.

Now just who could that be that you were taking a swipe at HC? And, by the way, why?

Now just who could that be that you were taking a swipe at HC? And, by the way, why?

Is it a swipe to say that someone is of average or moderate intelligence? I suggest it is not. If I said someone was below average, or downright stupid, it may be considered a swipe.

Also, is calling a spade a spade a swipe? I suggest that calling a spade a spade is a fair comment.

Perhaps it was someone that we do not know since you refused to answer the question.

Of course you would not consider referring to someone as having average intelligence as swipe. Perhaps, for you, it might even be considered a compliment. And saying that someone is 'below average', or 'downright stupid' may be considered a swipe?

I stand corrected. :whistling:

I see we've descended to the playground again. You folks talking about "intelligence" and acting like 12 year olds are a wonder to behold

That is, without a doubt, taking a swipe at me.

From your reply, I infer that you consider yourself to be of above average intelligence. So far, especially since you're a lawyer and thus supposedly adept at debate, I have seen no evidence of it.

Althought the words of Oscar Wilde are often witty...... I do not take all his words as logical or witty all of the time....your quote is one such example.

To "call a spade a spade" is to have the gumption to call things as they are. Mr Wilde's quotation here is plainly illogical and nonsense.

No, I believe this guy's famous quotes are "You got a purty mouth" and "Squeal like a pig!" while dueling banjos play in the background.

For the lively Mr. Wilde had quite the reputation towards controversial calls himself - the truth, as he saw it. Regardless of the hushed society in which he lived. A spade....sort to speak.

I have to admit that in this case venturalaw's quote that I included was the wittier of the two. :D

What did I say that could be interpreted as a swipe at you; that you failed (and so continue) to answer the question as to whom you were referring? Mr. HC, sir, I meant no insult to you, especially considering your adept debating skill, and that it has been my lifetime aspiration to be a meat cutter from New Zealand.

Yes, these passive-aggressive attacks on other posters are so much more mature. :D

I must admit I do occasionally pass through these sainted halls, just to see how the Intelligent members play. Always a pleasure.

Would this be irony or sarcasm? We Americans are supposed to have a hard time telling them apart, so I just wanted to be sure. :D

Sorry can't answer the question, I'm too thick being a Brit to know the difference apparently..........

Frankly, either one can.

On the contrary I feel very disappointed that some of the people who have vast experience of parts of the world that most of us will never get to and who could shine a light into the places that most of us aren't privileged enough to visit choose to indulge themselves in Punch and Judy shows.

Perhaps you would yield a more positive response, thereby avoiding disappointment, if you cease indulging your urge to treat as children those with whom you disagree, or do not understand. Name calling/demeaning will most likely preclude those who have 'vast experience of parts of the world' from sharing.

I enjoy reading about their experiences as well. Either in Saudi, Iran or with Tony whatshisface.

I've noticed though for people who have lived there and experienced things first hand, if their take on things differs from those who get their info from conspiracy blogs or the like then the experienced people get dismissed. For example, the posters who have actually served in Afghanistan or Iraq apparently don't know as much about what's happening in those countries as the Huffington Post or Michael Moore.

You make a reasonable point, but one that is emotively charged not neccesarily logically based. It is a reality that often one can't see the wood for the trees.

A soldier in Iraq would certainly have seen violence, bloodshed, and hatred....it does not actually make him an expert on what is going on in the halls of power.

Yeah, I have met lots of interesting people during my lifetime but I hesitate to post too many of my personal experiences due to the stalking practices some members pursue. They often attempt to belittle experiences in favor of internet knowledge and, to me, it isn't worth the hassle.

If you want to add into the mix what happens in the "halls of power", maybe not. But if I want to know what the Taleban is really like, how the locals really feel about our presence there, I'll ask people who experienced it first hand. The picture they paint will be much closer to the way it really is.
