Terrorist plotting cricket World Cup attack arrested

2011-03-25 04:58:58 GMT+7 (ICT)

ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Thursday a terrorist plotting to target the ongoing cricket World Cup was arrested, the Times of India reported.

Rehman Malik, who did not identify the nationality or the affiliation of the alleged terrorist, said at a joint briefing in Islamabad with Interpol chief Ronald Noble that there was a "serious attempt" to carry out a terror attack during the tournament. The International Police Organization helped to uncover the plot.

India was informed of the plot since there were reports that the Taliban is now operating in the neighboring country.

"Let's not forget that terrorists have got no boundary or religion. There are several indications that the Taliban have started their activities in India," Malik said.

"I am saying this on record and I have also informed India. We must work together to stop the work of terrorists," he added.

Malik did not elaborate on the Taliban's activities in India. He claimed that the arrested man had no connection with Pakistan.

"Last week, with the help of Pakistan, we identified and arrested the terrorist who had left Karachi... Thanks to the cooperation (of Pakistan) and other countries, we were able to make sure that the World Cup remains safe," Noble said, as cited by the newspaper.

Earlier this month, India issued an alert about possible terror attacks during the World Cup, which is being played across South Asia.
