'Twitter in advanced talks to buy TweetDeck'

2011-04-19 03:46:41 GMT+7 (ICT)

SAN FRANCISCO (BNO NEWS) -- Social networking website Twitter is in 'advanced' talks to buy TweetDeck, a popular desktop application that enables users to read messages and post updates to Twitter, according to a news report.

The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that Twitter is offering to buy TweetDeck for around $50 million, according to people familiar with the talks. Neither Twitter nor TweetDeck commented on the report.

Since its release in 2008, more than 20 million people have downloaded TweetDeck, which is free and most recently began to support other social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. But the application remains most popular with users of Twitter.

In February, the Financial Times (FT) cited sources that company UberMedia also wanted to buy TweetDeck, and that a deal was believed to be close. The report at the time said UberMedia was offering $30 million for TweetDeck.

UberMedia, formerly known as TweetUp, is part of Idealab and has recently acquired other Twitter tools and services.
