Buy Sony Psp In Europe For Our Son In Thailand?

Featured Replies

Hi there everyone,

Wanting to buy our son (he lives in Thailand) a present, we stumbled upon the official Sony web site for Thailand and saw that the only model that seems available in Thailand is the model PSP 2006. Would it make sense to buy him a PSP from Europe (UK, Germany, Netherlands)? They seem cheaper here (8,500 vs. 6,500 Baht) and there's the fact that the model 2006 is rather old...

What about games? Would he be able to buy games in Thailand and play them on his EU-version of the PSP? Am I missing any other issues here?

Many thanks for all feedback!

Not true that they only sell the old PSP in Thailand. You can easily buy new models at any game shop. PSP 3000 and PSP Go are both about 6000 Baht, so no real savings buying in Europe if they are selling for 6500 there

A PSP purchased in Europe would be able to play any/all games. Newer games, which might require newer firmware, typically come on the game media (UMD).

The first generation was the PSP1000 (aka, FAT or PHAT as it was a bit thick). The second generation was the PSP-2000. The third and current generation is the PSP-3000.

The last digit is used as a country/region code/identifier or specific bundle/color, hence the PSP-2006 (not from calendar year 2006).

You may want to drill down a bit to determine if your son wants or expects to be able to play copy games on a hacked PSP. If so I would suggest you buy the unit here in Thailand. Hamoto Game sells modded PSPs and has a great reputation. There may be other similar shops. At the other end of the retail spectrum is Saphan Lek (Iron Bridge Market) in Yaowarat, where 'caveat emptor' reigns supreme. Lots of PSPs there, and lots of savvy Mathayom kids. In between, there are shops in MBK which sell original and modded PSPs.
