Stephen Hawking Says Heaven Does Not Exist

Featured Replies

I did have a good friend stab me in the leg with his pencil in the 7th grade. I can show you the mark from that if anybody is interested.

I still have the mark where a good friend stabbed me in the arm with a pencil in 10th grade. That stuff never comes out, does it?

It's there forever. Get used to it.

Consider, too, that the religious authorities condemned any science that refuted the official accepted views.

And vice versa.

Not exactly....Scientists never imprisoned, tortured, or executed a religious expert for naysaying their views.

I am rapidly approaching my 74th birthday. If I haven't figured it out by now, why bother? If they expect me to believe the universe started when NOTHING exploded though, they will be sadly mistaken.

I was upset when I read Stephen Hawking pronounce there is no Heaven. He's a really smart guy so I guess I have to believe him.

I was so looking forward to playing uninterrupted golf absent the usual aches and pains. :D

Are you certain that it will be uninterupted golf? Maybe it will be a thousand virgins to satisfy....could be the Muslims have it right.

B)

That would be a first.

That Muslims have it right?

Maybe....but you would have to say the same about the Christians too.

And jews.

That just isn't true.

The early scientists were in in fact religious. It's just that science continually made discoveries that contradicted religion. It's not even as though they set out to disprove religion, rather that religion is so full of lies and falsehoods it was inevitable it would be found out.

And again, science is happy to be proven wrong. Text books are always having to be updated, but when is the last time the bible was updated?

How far back are you going for this? I'm unaware of any scientist being tortured or executed for their views in recent history. Do scientists really show respect to religious beliefs?

Do scientists really show respect to religious beliefs?

your admitted ignorance of matters above your intellect,

What is with the constant name calling? Everyone else seems to be trying to cut it out, but you continue it in almost every post.

“There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” - Stephen Hawking

Sounds like he is ridiculing people who believe in Heaven to me.

I agree with him entirely.

Why should science be shackled for the sake of those who believe in something for which their is absolutely no evidence or rational explanation. Until evidence found religion is just that, fairy tales. We laugh at people who are afraid of ghosts or the bogeyman, how is this any different?

What are we supposed to do, tip toe around in case we hurt the feeling of people who are not thinking rationally? Even if he used softer terms they'll still decide to be insulted anyway.

Fairy tales it is!

Yet you blindly follow people like Hawking, accepting his suppositions on faith alone. Unless of course you have personally verified his mathematical equations and have found them to be accurate and entirely provable.

Who is to say Hawking isn't merely a smart Al Gore.

Has anybody ever stopped to think that atheism could also be a form of religion? (rhetorical)

A smart Al Gore? What an oxymoron that is Chuck.

If you have been following my comments in this thread you will see that quite the opposite is true.

I actually started this thread by saying I was disappointed in his comments. I have also said that I don't see how anybody could possibly say there is no afterlife without evidence, how does that possibly equate to me following him blindly?

It sounds like we've come full circle.

I'm on the side of science, I don't practice any religion. But this all reminds me of a friend who is spiritual but doesn't follow any organized religion. He brings up bit about having no proof of God, Heaven, etc but when I questioned him about his own beliefs, he didn't have any proof either. There's plenty of faith to go around. :)

Oops. You did actually say that so my apologies. Wonder where I came up with the idea from?
