I have two GPS enabled smart phones. One is a Nokia and the other is a Windows phone. Both work but are a pain to use especially when you get a call while trying to use the GPS.

I would save some money and buy a dedicated Garmin unit plus a decent Nokia. A 6,000 baht Garmin and a 2,000 baht Nokia will give you the best of both worlds.

I've been using Garmin XT on a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone without any problems. Wish I could hear some ideas for a system as good on Android?

Ok then... google maps with navigation... there ya go.biggrin.gif

I use an iPhone4 with Tom Tom GPS, no need to be online for it to work and its as good as anything else I've come across.

Ok, I'll bite, but I thought Google Maps needed to be online, and thus invalid to this forum thread?? Am I missing something?

You've got it right. Google Maps Navigation must have you online.

There was a topic on offline navigation site quite a few months ago but as things are changing fast in this field it is good to have this new topic. Let's hear from all who are using offline maps.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

There is a rumor running that Google Maps will offer off-line capabilities "later this summer".

as far as i'm aware once cached it offers offline capability now according to some websites... BUT honestly WHY would you want offline.. If you have a smartphone i presume you have an unlimited package otherwise whats the point.

Dtac do postpay to almost any body with a long term visa (3 months or more)

and the 'faster' infinite promotions are cheap enough...... the edge connection is far superior to any other networks.

You seem to be implying that the available internet bandwidth in all parts of Thailand is fast enough to support online turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps Navigation.

Garmin XT Mobile is superb especially for its POI`s no other GPS software comes close on a phone from what I have seen.

If you are on Dtac and have Edge then YES that is what i have found. But to be fair i have not been out to the absolute boonies since getting the Android phone.... I find that Dtac Edge to be perfectly adequate even for internet browsing (Opera). And also for the Voice texting etc.

Maybe somebody else who lives in the boonies can tell us more.

Available for Android ? I do not think so.

I hate my nokia c6, The signal gps is really bad. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not. When I bought it I used it a lot, it was great, I use it in Bali, Thailand.... It found everything. But now the phone sucks, I cant connect anymore!

I will switch to iphone 5 when they come out.

What about windows phone? Garmin XT Mobile? For which phone is it intended? For windows phones only?

About the phone: Motorola Defy is water resistant, and that is mandatory in a country where the sky open wide out of nowhere, i had a swim with it just to verify a few days ago.

About aGPS =assisted GPS to acquire faster: Well, it has that, but the sun glare when trying to see anything and poor details of maps out in the bush makes it more of a toy,

not to mention i have yet to figure out how to use this thing.

Check that your C6 is up to date, latest firmware and software in. I have noticed in the past the updating firmware or the ovi maps sw can effect or fix issues with satellite log in. You can easily do this by connecting to Ovi Suite in your pc.

Anyone can advice. I'm using a Samsung Omnia....any Thai map to load in it for GPS use?

I have a Samsung GS2 and use Sygic, it uses tomtom maps and is only 19 pounds.

It does not need the internet, you just turn the GPS on the phone and your good to go.

Download it from the Android market, you get a 7 day free trial, if you like then go to http://www.sygic.com/en/android:buy-now to buy the thai map license.

The only thing is it uses a lot of power on your battery, so you should always have it plugged into a car charger.

Nokia e72 works like a charm, anywhere in Thailand, and I listen to the music from it while driving on my motorcycle, and battery life is superb. Also not using any of my minutes.

Which signal, GPS or A-GPS?

I.O. ive no idea, GPS or A . It worked ,then it let me down, so i use my old Tom Tom, i have no idea how that works either , but it does. I get a tad grumpy with these gadgets.:D .The thing plugged into my Laptop at the moment can blow up the Car Airbags., but Alcatell didnt put that in the Advert.

Sometimes when I start up my GPS it can't find any signal.

Have to "re-boot" the phone.

Only problem in Bangkok are the elevated express-ways........loss of GPS signal underneath.

Nokia N86 8MP with Ovi maps

I've never used a Garmin Asus phone but if I was going to use a phone as a GPS, that looks like a winner, Android and good battery life. Second best would be a Nokia with its free maps and simple to use GPS. You don't have to be a techie to load and use the Nokia maps.

E72 using A-GPS; Have a Galaxy Tab Wifi only also, and it works just as well . . .

I didn't find in iPhone app store tomtom for Thailand

Kind of a general GPS question... does anyone know if the 'Find My Friends' app (a spin off of the 'Find My Iphone' app) works in Thailand?

:)

For unlocked IPhones there is a workaround...

If you have iOS 4 you need version 1.3 of Maps Enhancer

You can find v1.3 at this Cydia source: http://cydia.myrepos....com/apps0rama/
