Good Map Of Chiang Mai

Hi everyone

Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if any of you could suggest a good, detailed map or street directory of Chiang Mai. I will be taking a job there next January and I'd like to get some sense of where things are.

For instance, I'd like to know where my new workplace is actually located, and what's around it. I'd also like to be able to look up the location for the places that so many of you are kind enough to recommend in your postings. For example, it would be great to be able to locate where various accommodation options are, and stores, and restaurants, and all kinds of wonderful things like that. Something that had transport routes on it would also be very handy. It's certainly not going to take away the adventure of exploring the place for myself when I get there, but I'm sure it will help me settle in a bit better ...

It would be great if I could order it from somewhere online, and get it posted out to me in Australia.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might like to help out with a suggestion. I know I could wait until I get there, but it's just so much fun to start thinking ahead ... I can't help it! ;-)

Hi, go to google.com or altavista.com and just search chiang mai map in the images section and you should find what your looking for fairly quick. Heres one i found very quickly Chiang Mai Map, dont know how up to date it is though, should find something to keep you going until you get there and then you should be able to pick up the free map in most hotels which is quite good or buy a good one if need be.

One of the negatives about Chiang Mai is that there just aren't any good maps that reach outside the central moat area.

There is one on the internet that is as good as you can expect to get until you arrive. See http://www.chiangmai-maps.com/.

If you print out the zoomed in areas on this internet map, you can then notate locations of particular things as you use this general map as an orentation guide.

You can often get a map on the hotels web pages and add them as well.

Many restaurants have web pages with maps.

I have been looking for a map that shows the highways with their Thai numbers to no avail. The internet map cited will give you the super highway, which is ring road number one. There is a second rim road and a third rim road (Highway 121) that circles the city but on the western side of the city, where it borders a major canal, you will not see its designation on any map.

When you get here, there are many tourist map pages in guide magazines that are quite detailed, but of course, only the advertisers establishments are shown.

I'm not a map type guy, but I know that the Nancy Chandler map is the only one that most people will buy.

It is updated every year and all of the new businesses that are oriented to farangs are added and ones that have closed are removed.

Of all the Chiang Mai maps I've seen, by far the clearest/most detailed is the B&B "City Streets" version (ISBN 3-89707-178-9). The detailed area covered is about the same as the online map mentioned by ProThaiExpat but with most roads named/numbered and indexed - together with main landmarks, banks, hotels, hospitals etc. B&B is Berndtson & Berndtson - check them out at this link:

The other side shows maps of the city region and the province. The whole thing folds small and is laminated - so it'll last as long as you do

The Nancy Chandler map is great and packed with info (as well as in the accompanying guide booklet) - but I found the layout is quirky and difficult to make much sense of on its own unless you're on the spot. That said, it's a good one to combine with the B&B map.

The by far best one I have found is the Periplus Regional map. It includes city maps of Chiang Mai (1:20,000), Chiang Rai (1:17,500) and Mae Hong Son (1:14,000) as well as several excellent road maps. The road maps include the road numbers which are rare in other maps.

I agree, the Periplus Editions map is more accurate & detailed than B&B when it comes to the Chiang Mai city map. For the countryside B&B has the edge.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the great help you've given!

There's certainly a few great suggestions here, which I'll be following up as soon as I can, and I'm now confident that I'll be able to find something that will cover what I want and keep me busy until I arrive. I don't really need tourist information, just a map with enough detail to have a chance of being able to locate things I have an address for -- so I think I'll leave the free and/or touristy ones until some time after I arrive.

The online and guide book maps I'd found were interesting, but with only the major streets marked I couldn't even get a really accurate idea of where I will be working. I know it's in the north-west, outside the moat, and I know the street name, but it's not marked on any of the maps I found on the internet.

Anyway, from the suggestions people have made I think either the B&B or Periplus maps look like they might be the ones I'll try to get hold of. I'd actually forgotten about Periplus, but I think I now remember having a map of Phnom Penh that was made by them, and had a good amount of detail. If their Chiang Mai map is similar, I'm sure that would do just fine for my preliminary offshore investigations, as would the B&B one (their web site had a sample of the Bangkok map, but their link to the Chiang Mai map was broken!).

Change the last digit in the URL from a 3 to a 2 and you will see the CM maps.
