Skype Video (Or Similar) On 3G ?

Featured Replies

I live a few hundred yards from Lotus. The internet has been a real bind over a course of 5 years. Depending on where are apartment is I've variously been on True dsl, Tot, and a few apartment provided wi-fi systems. I've also tried Mojo, I-Kool, I-mobile 3G (TOT), and recently DTAC. It's not an equipment issue as my devices work in the local internet shop.

I increasingly need to use video call on Skype, or Windows Live would do.

Nothing I've tried meets that need. In fact most things I've tried don't even provide a good surfing experience in general.

The only thing I can do is use the local internet shops.

At the moment I am stuck with a truly poor service provided by my condo. They will let me put in my own line, but I can't see the point as this has never provided a solution in the past. And we have decided to move to a different location.

So I wondered if there is a mobile service in the Fortune Town area that is sufficiently powerful enough to allow Skye Video Call?

I suspect not, so I also would like to know if broadband in Pattaya would do the trick?

I use Skype video in Pattaya nearly everyday to England,I have 3bb 10mb. The call quality is excellent and can normally video for hours without interruption. Also i have True 3g and have had some great success with that in the past when tethered to my notebook.

It depends who you are calling (i.e where the other person resides). TOT 3G has pop points in Italy, UK, US (Los Angeles), Japan, Singapore etc. meaning connection to US and most of the Europe would be good.

Stay away from True 3G because upload speed is limited to 100Kbits which is not enough for Skype, hell its even not enough for Voip (Due to packet loss and ping time).

TOT 3G is your cheapest bet on Skype (99 baht for 500Mb, 199 baht for 1200Mb / 45 days)

Thanks for your answers. Looks like Pattaya then. I am actually here on holiday and am using TOT wifi at a small guest house, and it's pretty good. The upload speed does appear to be important.

TOT3G where I live in Bangkok (through Mojo, I-Kool) isn't the answer, just a little better than dial up at most times, same the new DTAC service.

I really think my problem is mainly one of location.

I call the UK.

Tot has direct pop to uk which makes it a good choice for you. i also use tot 3g and it works pretty dam_n good for me in bangkok

3G in general is not an answer for video calls. Might work now when subscriber base is still small though in some locations.

What you need is broadband (ASDL, fibre etc) that gives you constant and good speeds to the ISP's servers in Bangkok and naturally an ISP that has the international bandwidth to UK.

If you have tried fixed broadband without success It's most likely that your building is too far from the switch box, bad cabling work or that your area is congested, ie many subscribers pulling torrents down.

I've actually used AIS 3G for Skype video calls in Chiang Mai and it worked well. On the other hand, about 50% of the time I can't even do a Skype audio call using AIS 3G in Bangkok, let alone video. Definitely seems to have something to do with congestion.

I don't know about True and DTAC, but forget AIS 3G as a reliable 3G service in Bangkok for Skype video.

It's been one year since the last post.

Any updates on this? What would be a the best 3G now

for skype in the Chonburi/Pattaya area?

Is motorola Atrix 2 a good choice? OK that's a separate issue

Cheers in advance

I use skype on my phone, perfect audio and acceptable video with one2call sim (phone has a front facing camera just for this).

Skype on my Pc also perfect using both Dtac and True-h through a usb 3g dongle (zte 21mbps model from ifox)...

Sent from my GT-I9001 using Thaivisa Connect App

I get brilliant Skype video calls on Samsung Galaxy tab and Dtac 3g - I was told this is because Dtac uses HSDPA which handles upl/dnl differently (faster) to 3g
