Canadian accused of 15 year old murder extradited to Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- In a landmark extradition case involving Canada and Thailand, a murder suspect who apparently fled to Canada 15 years ago has been sent back to Thailand to face trial.

In the early hours of Friday, Pattaya SWAT Team officers escorted Mr. Michael Joseph Charles Karas aged 55 to Pattaya from the Airport in Bangkok. According to arrest warrant number 3218/2539 dated 24th September 1996 Mr. Karas is accused of killing and then mutilating the body of Khun Suwanee. The body parts were then placed inside a Black Suitcase which was then disposed of. This is claimed to have occurred on 23rd September in the afternoon. Mr. Karas declined to speak about the case in front of the gathered media

Happened in The Bay Breeze Hotel Soi Honey, they call it the "chopping room", can't remember exactly, but it was on the 8th floor

Any way "Welcome to Hell" Mr Karas, I wonder if he read the book while he was in Canada? guilty till proven innocent is the way in Thailand, I am surprised that with the human rights abuses that that place in Thai jails, that any western country would extradite here.

Are prisoners still manacled till their trial?

The news article says it was room 805.

If you read the background details to the case in 1994 I think it is only fair and just that he serve his time in a Thai jail.

I dont think there is any shadow of a doubt that he killed his then girlfriend and chopped her up.

Truly horrific.

If given the situation above and the below...

THE KARAS CASE

- Jan. 22, 1994: Karas breaches parole in Canada and relocates to Thailand.

- Sept. 23, 1996: Suwannee killed and dismembered.

- Sept. 24, 1996: Police find body parts in swamp.

- Sept. 25, 1996: Karas leaves Thailand for Canada.

then, rather than jail time, a more appropriate destiny...

execution_9.jpg

- Dec. 12, 2003, the first execution by lethal injection was carried out in Thailand.

I am surprised that with the human rights abuses that that place in Thai jails, that any western country would extradite here.

I would have thought that killing someone and chopping up her body would be considered a human rights abuse. While he is not guilty until proven in court, the Thai government would have to have established a compelling case in order to justify extradition ... of course the only court that really counts is the ThaiVisa fact-free forum.

No offense to the victim or her family and friends but, wouldn't human rights abuse be if she was chopped up before she was killed?

No death penalty for Karas! Let him serve out a life sentence with NO parole!

as this is a cold case, will the Thai's have proper evidence to convict him?

Sure, they'll take him to the scene to re-inact the crime, after they have given him a slap up meal of filet mignon followed by crepe suzettes.......they're nice like that.

I just the love all the pics when the BIB arrest someone. You have the entire police force posing for the family album with the offender and everyone is always smiling including the accused. They pics always look like pleasant holiday snaps with new friends.

It would be nice for the courts to find him guilty first.

That said however, it doesn't look good:

It was his girlfriend

The room apparently had blood everywhere in the bathroom

He checks out at 3 in the morning with a load of "heavy suitcases"

He flies out the next day

Confesses to a previous crime whilst in jail in Canada so his sentence is increased while they argue about extradition

No matter what she did, or who did it, she was a 24 year old girl and nobody deserves what happened to her.

No death penatly 100% sure.

Standing trial is fine, but the on kangaroo courts worldwide should make sure, that a fair trial is guaranteed, that the suspect is not paraded in front of the press or photographed and that the accused have a decent lawyer. Everybody who ever observed Thai justice in action knows that the Justice system cannot be trusted, that long sentences are given without the accused haveing proper representation and that suspects are used as a trophy by incompetent police and court authorities.

If the death penalty had been on the table, Canada would not have allowed his extradition.

LIFE in a Thai jail seems a much worse and more appropriate punishment. Assuming guilt is proven.

Or......perhaps.....liver & bacon with some "fava beans followed by a nice Chianti" ?

Although this may sound racist, "Karas" doesn't strike me as a typical Canadian surname; i.e., neither French nor English...and the vast majority of Canadians are comparatively non-violent. I KNOW this.

There's nothing racist or nationalistic about your comment. What is strange is the fact that you think there should actually be a "typical Canadian surname"

Canada, like the United States and Australia and the U.K. is not xenophobic and has a population made up of immigrants from almost every country in the world. Thus Smith, Fraser, Jones, O'Grady, Levesque, Gambino, Krajewski, Wong, etc are all typical Canadian names, including Karas . His last province of residence would appear to have been British Columbia.

The vast majority of people in every country are non-violent, you get a minority of scum everywhere, Canada included.

Although if you believe kids on internet sites giving it the Danny Dyers you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

I guess if his name was MacKenzie or some such it would be easier to believe he is Canadian?

Would you prefer them to be scowling at the camera instead?

thai police so proud at the backgfound, so funny, like they came back after a hunt and have a deer trophy

but justice was served. for horrific crime

good work polica

Maybe there's an agreement he can serve his time in a Canadian jail if convicted to solve the problem of Thai jail conditions.

I can understand why he wanted to extend his stay in a Canadian prison as long as possible. Just the fact that he was released from the Canadian justice system to be extradited to Thailand tells me he is guilty as hell and the Thai authorities must have taken the death penalty off the table. Either way he will pay for the crime and in a Thai prison which he will detest after 15 years in a Canadian "hotel". (by comparison) :whistling:

If it took the Thai government 15 years to extradite him I don't think they will be so eager to send him back to Canada to serve his Thai sentence. He is on Thai soil now and they will call the shots.
