Notifying Police Of An Alien In Residence Outside The Main Centers

Twice now ( different locations, not in farang popular areas ), I've gone with my wife to notify the local police that I'm living with her ( as required ), but it always seems like they don't know what it's about, and end up writing half a page in a big book.

If it was that complicated in Pattaya or Bkk it would take several policemen doing nothing else to note the details of thousands of tourists checking in every day!

The next time we move, is there an easier way?

I can't be the only farang that notifies the local police that I'm in residence.

PS I know that it's my wife's responsibility, not mine.

think you are !,

I have never notified the police when i hav moved !, its not there job

On your entry card you should have your address, if you do a border bounce every 3 months, they will have your address, or if you do a 90 day notice , they will have your address, but i have NEVER known them to check this

PS try immigration next time ;)

I wouldn't count on that.

I think you are. In one place I lived ,the local bib ,came around once a year, even fingerprinted me, which was amusing ,as due to an industrial accident ,I have only 7 fingers- that threw them, caused a bit of scratching of heads. Do we "fingerprint " the stump? .But, in the area In which l live ,no-one else has ever seen the bib. All the evidence ,they need to certify your place of abode, is either your visa renewal or your stupid 90 day report, which includes your telephone number

Actually it is the job of your landlord to inform them within 24 hrs of arival or leaving to another provence. penalty about 2000 baht. If they do not you are generally the one that pays.

Nor have I. Such police state nonsense.

Throughout the numerous years and long-term locales I've called home [surin, Sukhothai, and Phitsanulok], I've never even considered checking-in.

As, I've never considered myself an "alien" of sorts. I've always felt right at home.

Outside of that....I also don't find a need [nor desire] to carry my bladdy passport everywhere I go. And I've never been asked...

I also attempted this w/ the local 5-0. ( population of around 100 in the local village, in the middle of the jungle, out far away in the sticks) At first, they just kinda looked at me dumbfounded.... and after reading some SOP on the subject in the manuals.. they told me to go to immigration to do that.

Immigration could have cared less.

I registered once with CM immigration with the "residence notification" ( actually had the landlord do it..when the big push was on for it around 2 years ago..) and when I again tried that when I moved, Immigration told me.." you live next to my old girlfriend, so I know where you are and no need for me to do any paperwork..."

Immigration, what immigration? I'm not living somewhere big enough to have an immigration office. Or is it your suggestion that I pay to go to a far away place just to do that?

Exactly, and as that's my wife, I don't want her getting fined, as it'll be me paying!

Thanks Steve #7 for that. Will make it a bit easier in future.

And as for all those saying go to immigration or not the police job, the relevant section says

MUST NOTIFY THE LOCAL IMMIGRATION OFFICE IF THERE IS NO IMMIGRATION

OFFICE LICATED IN THAT AREA THE LOCAL POLICE OFFICIAN MUST BE NOTIFIED .

Thanks to those that replied.

you need to notify immigration or rather your wife does but hardly anyone bothers and risk of not doing so is minute however their is a 10,000 baht fine payable by owner of property if aliens be they husbands or not live at their property. My wife bothers because a friend of hers got a visit from 5 guys from immigration while her husband was away querying his marriage visa. They were very intimidating and tried to get 5,000 baht saying it should be 10,000 baht. But risk is minute of that happening. It takes 2 minutes at immigration and its meant to be done every time you come back into the country even if you have not changed address.

Hope they will take away all of this nonsense in time .

Anyway , my wife went to the local police office one day and asked if I or she had to notify me staying at our home , the officer

told her this is not necessary because I'm her husband so it's also my home( not relevant ) , told her that only when friends come to visit to notify them .

So I think we can take most of these statements with a bit of salt , regardless what's stated in law , the inforcers interpreted it as non- active .

correct and another officer will say you must. Law is totally clear but as I said minimal risk if you don't. However for sake of 2 minutes about twice a year and given we go past immigration office regularly not worth risking getting one of those awkward sods. WOuld be interesting to know if anyone has ever been fined. Probably no one. Police here have no idea of law or most of them and like most officials they just interpret as they think fit. What happened to my wife's thai friend is true. In end she had a lawyer who was a neighbour friend go down to immigration and file a complaint and matter was quickly dropped. Just a few immigration officers who decided they had found a new scam and choose wrong person to try it out on.

Just fill out the above linked form, both yourself & the housemaster, and post it (EMS or Registered) to the immigration office responsible for that area. Include a SSA envelope and the receipt of form will be posted back.

Quite easy.

That said, I personally have never seen it followed up on in the provinces.......
