I am currently looking into purchasing Turbo's and ECU's from Australia and in my various searches of the Thai customs website I haven't found out what the duty rate is on these particular items.

If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has any knowledge in regards to if the Free trade agreement between Australia and Thailand making these items attract less duty that would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

As there are plenty of Turbo's and ECU's in Thailand you can buy, I would think the import would be high enough not to make it worth your while if you were planning it as a business venture.

As you have not had any replies and I cannot give you a % answer try a PM to ' Philipm ' or maybe ' MPI ' .

If you go back to page 5 under ' Ultimate diesel performance ' you can get there PM's.

Most of the ECU's and Turbo's I have come across in Thailand have been of shall we say questionable quality. I know of many "powerchips" that claim to increase fuel economy and horsepower which are very cheap however they do no such thing and just cause electrical problems in the long run. I am more planning on concerntrating on the performance car market where people demand a good quality product which has real tangible results everytime not just empty claims. Turbo's while they can be found cheaply they are often of dubious quality and there is no way I would spend 300k on an engine only to put a 10-15k turbo on it from some most likely dodgy manufacturer.

I looked at Phillipm and MPI's profiles but they havent been online for quite some time, never the less I appreciate the reply :), I will however shoot MPI an email and hopefully he can be of some assistance.

In any case unless the ECU or Turbo is actually made in Australia rather than just being imported from there then the free trade agreement wouldn't apply anyway.

Yeah I know, the items in question are actually wholly made in Australia not just imported from Australia.

I shipped in a turbo from the US and called it something ridiculous like 'muffler reducer" and declared the value at $100 or $200. I ended up paying about 2000 baht in taxes on the declared value and tax on the shipping (shipping was $125). I'm sure an ecu ( autronic is it?) can be shipped as something else and declared at a low value. I carried mine in on luggage along with various other bits and bobs for the setup.

Plenty of good ECUs shops and Turbos around, you havent looked very hard if you think its all junk here, I run a hybrid custom turbo at 500 HP on a 3ltr diesel. Try MPI or HKS they wont put cheap crap or copy parts on your ride.

As for importing you can go that way as well but you will just wasting your money by the time you pay import and shipping for something you can by local.

I know there are good shops around who often have the best of the best Japanese parts, however with 0% import duty on car parts actually made in Australia. I think my stuff can be competitive especially considering the large mark up's equipment direct from HKS, Apexi or Garrett have to endure when imported from Japan.

With regards to the performance car market here in Thailand in my experience its a volume business targeting the diesel pickup truck. I want to target the small capacity petrol turbo engines like those on the Nissan 200SX, Nissan Skyline, Subaru WRX etc with quality parts made in Australia that have been used by Australians for in some cases decades without fault.

Go in a 7/11or good bookshop and pick up a copy of "pick-up performance" magazine. Full of adds, will improve your Thai reading skills too. They are on facebook as well..

Just got my Sept edition.

How does the 0% import on Australian made car parts work, does that mean as a normal guy importing parts for personal use I can get 0% import tax. ? Anyone tried to do it ?.

I'm not sure if you can do it as a personal import although I believe it would be likely, I think it would have to be a company that does that importing and then they have to prove the goods are in actual fact 100% Australian made.

Importing turbos,.... i have done alot of that.

but not from Australia.----mind you, their is various authorized sole dealers in thailand for the likes off companys such as, Turbosmart, precision etc.

Its a difficult business to be in, as the market prefers only 3 types of turbos, (Japan, USA and UK). you would have better luck bringing in fuel components and cam shafts etc.

Plus, their is a wideee array of turbos here, ones to suit from the cheap-copy turbos, 2nd hand turbos, brand new original, brand new performance racing types, 2nd hand performance etc.

so you would have to offer something drastically different, to be competitive.

their are plently of sr20, evo engines, subaru engines, mr2 etc with super high off turbos, billet wheels and such. (you would need to bring something wickedly special and at a good price) otherwise they would just buy a cheaper, more known turbo brands and specs.

the only turbo i see that is worth, is the Borgwarner EFR range, which has already has its sole distributor in thailand and is coming out here in the next month or so. but thats not from australia either.

Australia is really good for rotaries... maybe look into supplying australia made custom parts for it. (mazda rx7) -rx3 are rare here.

btw for the free trade agreements, that is related to certain industries. so you need to check if it applies to motor parts/performance parts. if it is, make sure you request certificate of origin. otherwise expect to pay hefty duty.
