Oxford University Phd Student Mistaken For Suicide Bomber After Going For Run In Weights Vest

Featured Replies

An Oxford University was mistaken for a suicide bomber as he jogged around the city's streets - wearing a weighted vest.

Armed police stopped the Iranian man after reports of a suicide bomber, only to discover he was a jogger wearing an exercise vest.

The suspect was ordered to stop running, put his hands in the air and drop everything as officers approached him.

article-2045539-0E3D34A900000578-556_468x708.jpg Shocked: Iranian student Goudarz Karimi said he could not believe the police response even after they realised he was not a suicide bomber

The officers carefully took off the heavily padded vest and searched it, looking for explosives and a detonator.

However, they found the Oxford University PhD student was wearing a training vest loaded with weights for added resistance when running.

Used by the likes of Prince Harry for his Armed Forces trek to the Arctic, the weight vest is becoming a popular exercise accessory.

was this a PC stunt by him? , a few have mentioned it was

No sympathy here. After all I was once prevented from climbing over the American Embassy in London simply due to being white.

Becoming more common. Let's have a shoot to kill policy. biggrin.gif

He looks like a rioter...let's lock him up for 20 years then send him to trial. Go on.....you know it makes no sense.....!

In fact I like Iranians...their attitude and food ..culture and smokes...plenty of friends and nights out in Edgware Road will testify to that.....lovely people.

We used to take halal killed mutton up to Bandar Shapour. The Iranians that we met were some of the nicest people I've met anywhere.

the debate isnt wether they are nice or not, i mean the thai narcotics department keep up with there quota at swampy with these guys, but wether a middle eastern looking man should be running in cental london with what looks to the eye on first glance a suicide vest !

this guy is supposed to be at oxford, did he not think before he went out what people might think? , i mean in london we are constantly told to look out for terroists, and i think this one ( although not ) was very in the face !

actually , what i just heard now on sky news that he was not only wearing that vest, but what alerted people to call the police was he was listening to his ipod while unknowingly singing the lyrics out load to the below song

"The officers carefully took off the heavily padded vest and searched it, looking for explosives and a detonator.

However, they found the Oxford University PhD student was wearing a training vest loaded with weights for added resistance when running.

I wonder if they'd have stopped Harry?

No they wouldn't. But then he's white and staunchly British and not considered a threat. So why would they?

Harry's a ginger

Has there ever been a ginger terrorist?

Don't tempt fate.

Do suicide bombers make themselves so obvious? I thought their whole idea was to get around unnoticed.

So the reason that they stopped this Oxford University PhD candidate is because he isn't white? or not staunchly British? or not considered a threat? or is it because his skin is the wrong colour and he has a beard? Is this what's called 'intelligence led policing'? If so, where's the intelligence?

The funniest part of the whole farrago is that the police advised him to wear a coat to cover his 'explosive vest' so he wouldn't upset the locals

The next thing you know is that paediatricians will be getting beaten up because the Great British Public can't spell... Oooops!

:clap2:

I doubt that Harry would be running around Central London alone.

Shoot first, ask questions later is an American trait. British bobbies are more likely to continue drinking their tea while watching a murder or bank robbery.

What do you mean Ian?

The British police are renowned for their quick and decisive action. Just look at the recent London riots for example, a fine display of a fast response and, ...... errrrrm.....

Oh!

Shoot first, ask questions later is an American trait. British bobbies are more likely to continue drinking their tea while watching a murder or bank robbery.

Unfortunately, after the 7/7 bombings, the police were watching a house in East London.

Guy came out, wearing a hoodie. Police followed him to the local tube station, shouted at him to stop.

He didn't, they shot him.

Wrong guy - a South American student.

Big stink at the time.

It was in Stockwell in South London. The guy ran off....I remember the mood at the time.....well many dead and a gang of bombers on the loose.....the public was keen to see arrests or worse.

The guy was crazy to have run off like that...apparently he was staying in the UK illegally...not a crime for which the police are likely to shoot you dead.....more's the pity.

The fact that we all remember this particular case, which happened under somewhat exceptional circumstances, shows how rare it is.

His name was John Charles De Menezes and he was an electrician not a student. He didn't 'run off' anywhere. He was followed from his house by plain clothes police officers who misidentified him as one of the previous day's bombers. He boarded a train at Stockwell station and was followed onto the train by plain clothes firearms officers. There's some doubt as to whether they actually challenged him but what is known is that they fired 11 times at point blank range. 7 of the bullets hit him in the head and 1 in the shoulder. They were hollow point bullets. It was said that his body was unrecognisable. Just another day another death for the Met. This is the police force that shot Harry Stanley because they thought he was carrying a gun when in fact it was a table leg.

Am I the only old codger who remembers the days when the British bobby was proud of not having to carry a gun? I still remember the shocked expressions on a class of Hong Kong students when I told them that we regarded the police as our friends (well, it was a long time ago).

Of course there are times, and probably were then, when they need to carry guns.... but if the police carry guns, mistaken shootings will occur. We should be proud that there are so few of them. Could any country whose police habitually carry guns say as much?
