Obama Couldn’t Wait: His New Christmas Tree Tax

David S. Addington

November 8, 2011 at 6:15 pm(1525)

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)).

Does anyone think that OTB ought to renamed? Perhaps US politics 101 might be better.

Does anyone think that OTB ought to renamed? Perhaps US politics 101 might be better.

Good suggestion. Take it up with the powers that be.

Edit in: I just performed a rapid survey on page one of OTB.

Of the 29 threads shown, 10 are on the US and 11 on the EU/UK.

Probably best if I don't. As long as bedlam provides somewhere for you to get your rocks off about Christmas trees you won't be bothering people with real problems.

There are 1 countries in the USA and 27 countries in the EU.

One of the great things about the internet is the matter of personal choice.

If I see a thread that looks interesting or entertaining I can click my little mouse and read it. If I am inspired by something I read I can then make a comment, hopefully adding something to either the humor or content of the thread.

By the same token, if I see a thread that does not have any interest for me, I can choose to not click the little mouse and pass it by.

An amazing invention, the internet.

Scrooge has decided NOT to tax Christmas trees...at least this year. ;)

Obama Administration to Delay New 15-Cent Christmas Tree Tax

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is going to delay implementation and revisit a proposed new 15 cent fee on fresh-cut Christmas trees, sources tell ABC News. The fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2009, was first announced in the Federal Registry yesterday and has generated criticism of President Obama from conservative media outlets.

The well-trafficked Drudge Report is leading with the story, linking to a blog by David Addington, a former top aide to then-Vice President Dick Cheney, at the conservative Heritage Foundation assailing the president thus: “The economy is barely growing and nine percent of the American people have no jobs. The time is upon us where the governments of many countries will be looking under every stone for pennies.

None should be surprised.

Lastly they can call it what they want but every time they print they steal from those who saved & played by what they thought were the rules.

Does anyone think that OTB ought to renamed? Perhaps US politics 101 might be better.

You're free to start topics that you are more interested in. We could do with a little more variety around here

And I bet the US including Israel owes more than all 27 European countries put together (statisticians check this, please!).

If that means anything.

Well, I personally had great hopes for the Christmas Tree Tax to reduce our national debt substantially.

Alas, Barack wobbled at the last minute and now we may never know.

I wonder if there is anything afoot to tax the Easter Bunny and his/her eggs?

If you look at actual debt to revenues the US is almost as bad as Greece & Italy.

Of course they never show that but instead tout debt to GDP which means nothing because GDP counts government spending.

GDP = private consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports − imports),
