Weve used UBC true for many years each year paying 1 full year in advance. This year we decided not to renew our contract. Our fault we forgot to inform since we tohught if we did not renew no problem. I have no complaint about any charges if its in the contract but just before Xmas we had a very aggressive call from head office in BKK saying we owed around 28,000 baht for new 1 year contract plus 2 months and a bit since last contract expired. We immediately told person calling we did not want it anymore and asked why we had to pay since we did not renew. He said you have to pay or well take you to court. A few days later the signal was cut. Today we went first to one true office to be told it had to be dealt with main office then went to main office to be told again we owed around 28,000 baht. I asked the staff to point out in contract why we should owe anything since we never renewed and anyway signal had been cut. At first she said you have to pay so I said Ok take it to court. She then got her boss who found a clause in contract which was ambiguous but could be interpreted as saying we had to give 30 days notice. So I said ok but why 1 year plus elapsed time since contract ended and also for time signal was cut off. Lots of you have to pay anyway and us saying Ok take it to court. Then they said we only had to pay since last contract plus 30 days from today. I answered even though you have cut the signal. Answer from true staff you asked us to cut signal not stop contract. I said ok send final bill and well see and take our 2,000 deposit of amount your claiming. Answer we wont refund deposit until bill paid. My answer ill pay bill if I think its legal less deposit. Answer then well take you to court. By this time id had enough and said fine well put it in writing to your head office. We will never ever use true again. While not over moon to pay after contract finished we agreed if contract said that so no need to try and force us to pay around 28,000 baht instead of maximum of around 4,500 we might owe.

Thanks. Unfortunately this practice of taking a years contract and them extended it until you cancel it is common practice with mobile phone companies in the UK. When you question them they tell you it's upto you to cancel it. Erm it was a years contract you sold me not a rolling one.

I’m sorry but in this case UBC are quite within their rights to take legal action against you.

The contract states that one month’s notice must be given for termination of the service. If no notice is received by UBC than how do they know that you no longer wish to continue with the service? As far as they are concerned, payments are over due and the service is cut for this reason, but the contract has not been cancelled.

It`s the same with my ISP and telephone.

My advice is; to pay any balances due and cancel the service as prescribed in the contract to save a lot of hassle. Otherwise you could find yourself blacklisted from certain service provider companies in the future.

OP, how long would you have continued to watch True without paying if they didn't call you on it?.

Sounds like you owe them for at least 3 months.

I have said on this forum before that TRUE is the worst company I have dealt with in Thailand................Stay away from them they are nothing but thieves.

I just wouldn't pay, they always try it on and they never go to court.

If you aren't working, they couldn't recover the money anyway even with a court judgment..

No Thai would pay this.

IF you get blacklisted and want the service again, get a new contract in the other partners name.

Yep.

The only skill you need to have is to throw away lots and lots of ever-more-threatening letters. No matter how official they look. They will try intimidation by letter... don't fall for it.

An auto renewing contract like that should be illegal... total scam...

Sorry guys, but ignoring their letters could prove to be a very bad thing. I don't recommend this at all. Deal with the situation legally. Wifey had a problem with DTAC years ago. She ignored the letters, no money was involved anyway. When she tried to get a police certificate for her visa to the US, it was listed there! We had to go to the police station and deal with it. No fun, and it was expensive, as you can imagine. These things can follow you around for years.
