Questions You Have Always Wanted To Ask But Never Did...

Anyway, Why do Thai people stop when they get off the escalator?

That goes for those groups of Chinese tourists that insist on stopping when the moving walkway ends at Suvarnabhumi.

And why can't they figure out how to fill out there Inmmigration Cards before they get to the Immigration counter.

Not just escalators and moving travelators that annoy me - why do people try to get into a lift (elevator) before the people in the elevator have got out?

(fortunately, as a rugby player for fifty years, I just keep moving out no matter how many obese women are trying to get in)

I was in the old KL airport just before it closed and after leaving the plane you came down an escalator and there was a small room at the bottom with a door leading into the main arrivals area.

I was the first down and realised the door was locked and in a few minutes the other 300 people off the plane behind me were going to be trying to fit into a 3m x 3m room.

I think even you engineers would struggle with that concept but an airport staff member arrived in the nick of time and unlocked the door.

Frightened the crap out of me...I was already trying to get under the escalator!

If a helicopter is in the air stationary, will the ground below move beneath it do to the planets rotation?

If the Earth is really round, why do all rivers flow south, except for the Nile?

Why is only one side of the moon always facing the earth?

All rivers do not flow south

ahh ok, ive been misled...

...but what about the helicopter ???

Can you rephrase the question. It doesn't make a great deal of sense to me.

I don't understand the helicopter question either

*Edit

I think maybe he's asking..........

If a helicopter was hovering stationary over a patch of land, and considering the Earth is rotating very slowly, will the helicopter remain over that same patch of land? Or will the movement of the Earth mean that a different patch of land will move into position beneath?

I think!

If you're in a car with the windows closed doing 80mph, how can a fly inside buzz around as if it was in a stationary room?

(I actually worked out the answer while typing, but here it is anyway)

and considering the Earth is rotating very slowly

Speeds relative, however relatively fast to me, the Earth, measured at the equator, is rotating at 92.2299 rods per second.

How did you measure it? Relative to what?

Questions I have always wanted to ask...

What's all this, then?

What's going on here?

EDIT

For the rotation of the earth, a measure of rotational velocity may be more appropriate, like 15 seconds per second

For the rotation of the earth, a measure of rotational velocity may be more appropriate, like 15 seconds per second

Doesn't the Earth rotate through one second of one degree every 4 seconds? (24*3600)/(360*60)=4

(Considering an exact 24 hour day)

360 degrees x 60 minutes x 60 seconds / 24 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds

=15 degrees per hour or seconds per second. You missed out the minutes of arc.

Your calc give 4 seconds per minute (of arc)

I find the velocity of the rotation of the Earth to be in direct correlation with the units of alcohol consumed.

I find the velocity of the rotation of the Earth to be in direct correlation with the units of alcohol consumed.

You mean it goes in the same direction?

Imagine if it didn't - it would be chaose in the pubs - units of alcohol rapidly diverging from the surface of the earth in random directions; I'm struggling to imagine it

"Ha - can't hold your beer!" would take on a whole new meaning, as glasses flew out the window. It would be like that night in The Flying Tumbler all over again.

Actually, it reminds me of a night in Rothschilds, we'd all had a few (or we'd have not been there - it was a 2 am closing place) and we were stood in a circle, quenching the thirst of a hundred-yard walk from the Tap. D* dropped his pint (condensation on the glass, no doubt) caught it on the bounce, straightened up and said "I suppose it's my round then...". We stopped going there, on the grounds that we thought they thought we were drugs squad... and don;t ask about the pub theatre...

and considering the Earth is rotating very slowly

Speeds relative, however relatively fast to me, the Earth, measured at the equator, is rotating at 92.2299 rods per second.

But at the North and South poles (as marked by the axis of rotation) it is moving veeerrrry slowly.

Ever tried to stand at either of the poles and closed your eyes for 2 minutes then try to walk a straight line?

Robert Falcon Scott did and we all know what happened to him.

Now back to helicopters. A Bell 206 Jet Ranger is flying at 80 knots. Is the airspeed of the rotor blades constant?

Why do silver vans in Thailand always travel in groups while passing on blind corners?

Has someone previously told them there is no traffic coming from the other direction?

I beg to differ. The torn muscles in my left shoulder tell me a different story... and soft gravel is still hard when you land on it when your motorbike goes down.

Now back to helicopters. A Bell 206 Jet Ranger is flying at 80 knots. Is the airspeed of the rotor blades constant?

Airspeed or speed relative to the ground?

Consider the rotation of the blades - one going forward, one going back, realtive to the chopper.

Was Eric Cantona born in Hong Kong

He wasn't born, he was created.

"And on the sixth day God took mud from the centre spot of Old Trafford and created Eric Cantona in his own image and saw that it was good"
