wish i could go but won't be up in BKK until the middle of the month.

i've already bought my car (picking it up tomoz), but if i hadn't i would definitely go there as i've heard there are plenty of good deals to be had - not sure how accurate but something along the lines of dealers needing to boost their sales figures before the end of the year.

personally i would go just for the totty.

edit/

forgot to mention, some info in this post on the expo.

Car buffs should enjoy the sports cars that will be on display, including the new Mazda MX5, Subaru R2, Volvo C70 and Range Rover Sport. Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini have chosen not to join the Motor Expo this year.

A few lucky visitors will drive away with a free car. A “Buy a Car, Win a Car” promotion will offer a chance for customers who buy a car to win a Subaru R2. The prize in the “Buy a Ticket, Win a Car” lucky draw will be a Honda City. And a Suzuki Sporty will be awarded to the winner of an SMS game.

“Our show supports every level of the automobile industry, from start to finish, everything from parts to the finished product to sales,” said Kwanchai.

Other activities include 4x4 training by the Spirit of 4x4 Driving School, a car-audio show, the 6th Thai Young Automotive Designer Award 2005, a children’s drawing contest, a classic-car exhibition, a Thai cultural show, a wet t-shirt competition and the RAAT-Motor Expo.

There will also be a new section called Motor Sports, which will have on display modified cars and other motor-sports equipment. The display will be held for the first time this year and may be moved into the main hall if customer demand proves strong.

i thought it was funny that they called the Subaru R2 a sports car, the R2 is 600cc of pure muscle. I heard somewhere else that BMW and mercedes are not at the event either? Anyone know if thats true?

I noticed in the motoring post today that the organizer didn't mention the brands that weren't there but he seemed pretty confident they would be back.

I wanted to start a post for those people who went to the Motor Expo 2005 at IMPACT.  What did you see that you liked?  Any good deals advertised?  How many girls were actually dancing on the hoods of the cars?

Things like that.

I really wanted to go but time constraints stopped me. Even started to order extra batteries for my digital camera to get plenty of pics of the girls,... I mean cars. :D

Probably better off anyway, too many models (cars) that I couldn't keep my hands off of. :o

I went yesterday.

It was a disappointment.

BMW were there, but their space was small, and in amongst all the accessories and stuff, not in the main passenger car hall. But they had nothing interesting anyway. Nothing new.

Toyota had a face-lifted Wish, boring

Ford had the Focus, but that's not all that new. They also have a GT there, but just for show.

Most attention seemed to be around the new Honda Civic. I had to wait for about 10 minutes just to get to sit into one. It's cool and all, but isn't it a bit sad when the highlight of a motor show is a mainstream passenger car?

Seriously, I would not recommend this show at all, unless you are planning to buy a car and you want to go somewhere to see a pile of them in the one place.

As for the girls you are mentioning... well they were there, but vastly outnumbered by the spotty faced perverts with massive lenses (compensating for something).

I brought my camera but seriously there was nothing snap worthy. Anyone else been? Was there something I missed?

To be honest, I spent 2 hours getting there 1 hour walking around and 2 hours getting home. Could have spent 5 hours playing GT4. Would have been fun, and much more eye candy.

  • 2 weeks later...

BMW and Benz skipped the show this year, we'll never know why.

They had only second hand dealers there with a couple of newish vehicles on sale.

"Thailand Motor Show" is a confusing name - it's more of fair where people go to shop around. They used to offer special deals there but not anymore - people demand the same deals from the regular dealers.

The good thing is that the "show" highlighted the general problems in Thailand's auto industry - low sales volumes, low variety, low specifications, ridiculous tax system, trade barriers and many more. Until now everyone used to believe in the dream about "Detroit of Asia" - the car makers don't buy this shit anymore.

Won't be surprised if next year will see total demise of fringe brands - Alpha Romeo, VW, Seat, Skoda, Saab. Then there will be the turn of Ford and Nissan. They'll make only pickups and trade them of cars made in Philippines to keep the presense.

When they write someting like this in the newspapers: "GM has brought its Viper to the Motorshow but they hope that the real highlight will be 1.6l Optra Estate" you know there's something really wrong with the whole concept.

I doubt Nation journos penned it themselves - they probably asked all the car makers to write a few lines about their plans and GM obliged.

Since GM is approaching bankruptcy they need all the exposure they can get. :o

Indeed, the show sucked this year. For a few pics of the motor show and the totty on show look at my pics at www.pbase.com/climbingwez/motor_expo

All in all, not a lot to see there at all.

So did you test drive any of them, cars I mean? :o
