Whom to trust ,TOT speed, TV speed, ADSL speed??

These test were taken in short order and repeatedly, TV Speed against Bkk was dramatically slower than the others.

Erratic download can be actually felt when I use Youtube. At times total stop. Certainly not worth the 6Mbps line I should be getting.

What can I do to get my point acroos to TOT. The man was here, got, of course a good TOT reading, will not accept any other yardstick.

Different internet speed tests commonly use different servers to ping.

As the old canard goes- "your mileage may vary" depending on the time of day, local traffic, latency issues, etc.

It's completely expected to have different readings. WHen using the Thaivisa test you will be testing towards a different server, outside the TOT network; TOT cannot take responsibility for that. You might as well test to a server in Siberia and then yell at TOT.

The word 'lying' in the topic title is completely inappropriate. It's like complaining that you car's speedometer is 'lying' because you reach a different speed going in a straight line on a highway, versus taking a turn off the highway and driving through town.

(Doesn't mean other results are completely irrelevant of course, also international bandwidth is important, but usually much more limited. So I would do the test of your own connection to TOT, and then a 'real world' test to a server in the USA somewhere.)

This topic should probably in the computer sub forum.

From Oz right now I get 13 mbs to an Oz server, 5 to the US, 2 to the UK, 1 to KL 0.25 to TV and 0.2 to TOT

It is dependent on so many things....

All tests I did which are shown were done against Bangkok, if the ThaiVisa server is located in Singpore but the TV SPEED test allows for test against Bkk , I assume TV knows what they are doing.

ADSL test is against Thailand, wherever it's server might be located. Test were done all within minutes from each other and repaeted several times to avoid hick ups.

No idea how TOT does the test. Could well be against a local, in my case a Chiang Mai server, which would distort results.

At this moment I am getting over 5Mbps on everyone of them.

As I would expect assuming the same yard stick is used, allowing for reasonable variations but not for more than, say 20%. Otherwise what good for would be any test, if we accept there is no common denomminator.

BTW, TV test against Singapore 5.6 on a 6Mbps line, not bad at all.

Coming back to the legal issue of contractual obligation of TOT, I guess I must satisfy myself with a TOT test, that's it.

For checking your basic speed on TOT I would use their speedtester as you are staying on their network. When you start going to other speedtesters you are probably going through additional hops and using a different speedtest server which may give you a lower speed (by a little or a lot) depending on where the server is located, how many hops to get to it, bandwidth capacity of that server, etc.

Actually, I'm in Bangkok and I like using the TOT speedtester to check the basic, in-country speed of my 20Mb True cable plan...I also use speedtest.net and test to their Bangkok STS Group server which seems to be in-sync with results from the TOT speedtester; I could use the True speedtester but sometimes it just don't work. And the 3BB speedtester usually gives me the same results as the TOT and Speedtest.net speedtesters when checking to Bangkok. I've found the ThaiVisa speedchecker to many times show slower results...maybe too many users on it. But when doing speedtesting to international sites plan on a reduction in speed as all Thai ISPs limit/throttle their international bandwidth by X-amount...I expect this is due to the fact that international bandwidth costs them money as they are going off their network.

Take all speedtest results with a big grain of salt. And if you get download speeds and ping times to international sites like the speedtester server is right across the soi, then you are getting bogus results caued by in-country cache servers. When I was on TOT I never experienced that problem but now that I'm on True I can get 20Mb download speeds and 10ms ping times to pretty much any server on Earth....just like that server is in Bangkok...but it's bogus results. However, if I use one of the True proxy servers I get believable/real world results...guess the proxy server don't skew the speedtester results.

ThaiVisa server is in Singapore.

For their speedtesting function they have a Bangkok server and a Singapore server...select the one you want to test to.

Download a large file by FTP, or if you don't have access to an FTP server try downloading a popular file from a torrent.

Real life tests are far more accurate than any speedtest.
