December 15, 200520 yr STRICTER MEASURES ON HAWKER STALLS IN BANGKOK WILL BE ENFORCED NEXT YEAR Bangkok Deputy Governor WANLOP SUWANDEE (วัลลภ สุวรรณดี) commented on the regulations relating to hawker stalls in Bangkok, saying that not many traders are willing to cooperate with the officials on this issue. According to the official assessment, many hawker stalls in Bangkok do not abide by the ten codes of law, which have been set up for traders in the capital. For instance, one of the codes enforces the vendors to wash their kitchenware in three stages. However, most stalls do not follow the regulation, and moreover, they usually disposed the wastewater and food leftovers into the water ventilation system, resulting in clogged up canals and water pipes. Therefore, Mr. WANLOP said it is necessary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to enforce an intensive measure in the capital city, in which food traders will no longer able to wash their kitchenware, and fry or grill their foods on the public sidewalks. The measure is expected to be carried out next month. The BMA is asking for the hawker stalls to cooperate with the officials and to think of the public benefits as well. Following the New Year’s Festival, the administration will thoroughly inspect the sanitation of stalls in Bangkok.
