Once purchased there is NO cost until it is hosted and web space provided.

If its an existing name and domain there may well be costs already set up for it, you would need info from the registrant and operator of the site.

You'll probably buy it from an DNS provider. Godaddy (which is pretty ok for DNS hosting.. but maybe not other things) or maybe from Google.

If you buy for example thisisagreatdomain123.com, which is free to take. The cost is about 600B which includes first year of DNS hosting.

After that the cost is about 600B per year for .COM domains. Country specific domains like .co.th .tv are priced separately.

After buying a domain name from a registrar company, there is typically an annual fee charged to keep it.

Beware of hosting companies that offer you a "free domain". This is a trick in that they register the domain name in their name, and therefore they own it. If you want to change hosts, they can be difficult about it or charge outrageous price to release / transfer the name to you.

i perosnally own more then 300 domain .

i can tell you that the fee does not end at just buying the domain name .

--------------------------------

depend on which registar you sign up with .

There will be add on and option which will juice you out of your money .

For eg .AT Godaddy . you do need to pay extra for privacy ownership data .

while some other registar this is free.

-----------------------------

Depending if you need HTTPS you may need to pay to get SSL cert for your domain . speciall if you are going to run facebook app linking to your site .

that can cost between $5- 10 monthly to as high as $200 - 300 yearly .

this is mostly for site that need to run credit card check and transaction .

---------------------------

There is also DNS and even mail server .

---------------------------

not to scare you off .

As complex as it may sound .i

if you just going to run a simple website .

to update your travel photo or post some blog .

you very much only need to spend the yearly domain cost , and get a Hosting .

-----------------------------------

to sum this up .

Basic website

----------------

Cost

DOmain name - yearly fee

Privacy - depend on registar - can cost you extra $6-10 yearly

SSL - unless you doing some secure data transfer you relaly do not need it if you just running a simple website . ( i only run SSL on a few of my 300 domain less then 10 )

Average cost . Yearly - $10 or less domain

Hosting - $20-$100 depending on how big yor site is and how much datat transfer and so on .

I would suggest you never go for FREE DOMAIN NAME .

if you are good at backup maybe you can try FREE HOSTING . but don;t get yourself on the hook on FREE DOMIAN NAME . is just ways for hosting company to grab you by your balls

if yo have any question feel free to PM me .

yes that can't be said often enough....At any change of server you are in problems if the server and domain guys are the same.

I recommend getting your domain from Google when you sign up for a free Google Apps account. That way you get free privacy guard, and they set up your domain to automatically work with Gmail (excellent spam filter), Google Docs and Calendar all under your own domain name. $10 per year, best deal in town, no need to maintain a mailserver. Registration is via Enom (best) or Godaddy (kind of annoying, use Enom). There is also free Google Sitebuilder included but that is pretty crappy.

For SSL, should you require it, get a $10 certificate from Namecheap.

Quality facilities for peanuts.

You get what you pay for, both for "free" hosting and domain names. There is always a catch. Usually the free hosting is really at the - shall we say "less desirable part of town" and their service is usually abysmal. Good quality hosting is not expensive anyway, $5/month goes a long way.

As others have pointed out Godaddy should probably not be your first choice. Personally I like Enom and Moniker.

Feel free to PM me if you want more detailed information.
