Fugitive Former Premier Promises to Return to Thailand in Full Glory

SURIN: -- Fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra informed his red shirt supporters through a phone call that he would eventually return to Thailand in full glory.

Deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra delivered a message through a phone call on March 23 to a meeting of about 300 northeastern red shirt supporters from 20 provinces who gathered at the office of Pheu Thai MP for Surin, Teeyai Poonsrithanakul, in Surin's Rattanaburi District.

On this occasion, Thaksin predicted about the red shirts' political standpoint in the future, reiterating that he will field the red shirts in future elections of local administrative organizations.

Meanwhile, Thaksin said the Pheu Thai government was working hard to help the red shirt rally victims affected by the 2010 political crackdown under the Abhisit administration.

He stated that the government is managing to compensate the demonstrators with immediate and permanent rehabilitation measures.

In the meantime, Thaksin called on the red shirt detainees to be patient, saying that he is negotiating with the judges to help them. In the event that the government has no money to bail out red shirts, he will use his own money to bail everyone out.

The ex-leader also urged the red shirts not to take aggressive action against the Opposition Party but to express their willingness for negotiation to foster national reconciliation.

Moreover, he invited his red shirt supporters to meet him in Laos and Cambodia, saying he would be in Lao's capital, Vientiane, on April 12 and 13, and in Cambodia’s Siem Reap on April 14 and 15.

In addition, Thaksin reaffirmed he has no intention of returning from self-exile in accordance with the plan set out by Kwanchai Praipana, saying he would soon make a glorious return to Thailand.

Thaksin forecasted that the Pheu Thai Party would win all eight MP seats for Buriram Province in the next general election.

Opposition Leader Slams Thaksin for Tampering with Court

BANGKOK: -- The Opposition leader slams Thaksin Shinawatra for tampering the judicial system after the ousted former prime minister said his people are talking with the judges to help out in court cases against the red shirts.

Opposition Democrat Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva accused deposed and self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of attempting to interfere with the judicial system after the latter made blatant remarks during his phone call to red-shirt supporters at a rally in Surin Province.

The ex-premier said he has assigned Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Natthawut Saikua and Pheu Thai Party list MP Jatuporn Phromphan to talk to the judges for help with court cases against red shirts. Thaksin also said he would come home soon.

Abhisit called on the court to clarify its work process to the public to ensure transparency. He said Thaksin's action not only ruins the credibility of the justice system, but also adds more fuel to the unsettled political conflict.

The Opposition leader also submitted an open letter to a group of researchers at the King Prachadipok's Institute asking them to withdraw its research report from the consideration of the House Committee on National Reconciliation.

He claimed that the committee is trying to use national reconciliation as a pretext in order to wipe a slate clean for the convicted former prime minister without providing any solutions to the ongoing political problems to Thai society.

Abhisit said if the amnesty bill is passed to absolve a convicted person of his crime, it means whoever in power could point right or wrong at will, which is not a democracy.

Meanwhile, Jatuporn claimed Thaksin did not intend to disrespect the judicial system, but he meant to say that he would return to Thailand once he is convinced that the system is fair to him and not subjected to political influence.

The Pheu Thai MP said the ex-premier is assessing the situation and he might set his return date soon.

He confirmed that Thaksin will be in Laos and Cambodia during Songkran holidays.

An activity reportedly will be held in Cambodia to welcome red-shirt supporters from Thailand who will attend the bathing ritual for their patron.

To be honest, I did wonder.....

Elections have essentially settled political conflict, with political disagreements continuing, as is the case in all Democracies.

And there's the announcement. He is circling, like a vulture, an injured animal. For those who think Thailand's political problems are a minor factor, take note: April and then October (traditional military reshuffles) will be the hot points...Thaksin is already licking his chops and working towards realization of his power. If you wanted money and power (and were fantastically wealthy and corrupt), wouldn't you do the same? He is a pragmatic parasite (just like American bankers). Watching politics in Thailand is like a superficial reading of Shakespeare: Everyone is screwing everyone, and, thanks to protectionist policies, the system is incredibly incestuous and materialistic...if only Marx's "masses" knew of their own condition (Big "T" is working on that, but I don't think it will help him in the end [oligarchy is rarely appealing, though Russians show a strong affinity]).

So can we take it reconciliation is off the agenda now then?

- Using government (tax payers) money to bail them out?

BANGKOK: -- The court spokesperson denied bail talks with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, saying legal action might be taken as the claim could hurt the credibility of the judicial system.

Spokesperson for the Court of Justice Sitthisak Wanachakit denied claims by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that he is talking with judges about bails for detained red-shirt leaders and supporters.

Sitthisak stressed that the court is free from outside influence and it will consider bails for each individual case according to the law and the existing criteria.

He noted that the guarantee for bail may be assets belong to defendants, family members or any other persons.

The court spokesman said bail application is subject to approval by judges in each case and that typically the approval rate is 80 percent.

Sitthisak would not comment on whether Thaksin's remarks violates the law, saying that the court does not want to be involved in lawsuits.

However, as such remarks could threaten the credibility of the justice system, the court will take appropriate measures as a response, starting with issuing warnings and clarifications.

In the worst-case scenario, legal action will be taken.

How does your post relate to that which you quoted from the article :

(My emphasis) which IMO does sound like a reasonable first step.

But the 2nd TAN report doesn't say Thaksin is talking to the judges... It says Thaksin has asked his dynamic duo of Jatuporn and Natthawut to strong arm the judges... Then of course the court spokesman denies Thaksin is talking to the judges. But as for the other two???

Does anyone have up-to-date information on the number of 2010 protesters being released on bail?

At the beginning of February, after the Justice Fund was increased, it was very close to zero % and all I've seen since is that the red shirt bail cases at the end of February (around 5) had all been rejected.

It's disgusting how they play with people's future, hard worked-for assets and naive believe that their politicians
