Does anyone out there know where I can get a MIG welding machine, only for home use, not a unit for fabrication work. I want to be welding 2 to 3mm steel work for a fence and a couple of gates. So far I've only seen large units that can be used for fairly heavy work but nothing that looks like a home unit.

Mig welders are not very popular here (as you've noticed!). So finding a decent entry level model is going to be pretty difficult I think, there just isn't much of a market for them. Supplies will be subsequently sparse as well. I might suggest that you get a Tig welder, you'll be able to do the thin delicate stuff and can also use it as a stick welder for the big and nasty. Welpro has a wide range of readily available models and appears to be a pretty respectable company. Also someone referred me to this company that sells some western brands... http://www.diamondinter.com (likely at a premium though).

Thanks for the replies.

At the moment I have a Welpro WELTIG 250, which will weld anything really and can also, obviously, be used with a TIG set-up. Really just fancy the MIG coz its so easy to use, don't need to keep sharpening the tungsten bits etc.

As pointed out there doesn't seem to a huge market for MIG units here. Only one I did see was in the 40,000 plus bracket and I really don't want to go there.

Thanks again for both your replies.

hi there,

just keep in mind if your going to be doing a fence as you say, youll have to keep out the wind as it will blow your shielding gas away,

take care jake, x welder/ now welding supervisor

It's handy being an x-welder when you reject a weld and get the, what do you know about welding question and you can pick up the rod and run a nice vertical on something.

The shipyards and big fab yards in Thailand use these these machines along with flux corded wire, as well MIG/MAG for the sake of welding a gate and few posts...SMAW ?...not sure why you would want to p*ss around with wire feeder and gas for a job like that ?

The reason why MIG/MAG and flux core not so popular in Thailand...very simple....Thailand produces SMAW electrodes for export and MIG/MAG and flux cored wires are imported, in order to protect the Thai SMAW industry the import tax on these wires is quite high.
