Thai - Cambodia Conflict Thaksin Donates Blast-Resistant Boots to Protect Soldiers
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has donated state-of-the-art “fragmentation-resistant” boots to soldiers patrolling the Thai-Cambodian border and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, in a bid to reduce the risk of landmine injuries. The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Defence, where Gen. Natthapol Nakpanich, Deputy Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Defence, in his role as Director of the Special Task Force for Thai-Cambodian Border Management (Sor Bor Tor Gor), formally received the donation. Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit Sangkhapong, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and president of Class 10 of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, represented Mr Thaksin in making the presentation. Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit explained that Mr Thaksin was deeply concerned for the welfare of soldiers and EOD personnel, who often face grave danger from landmines, resulting in severe injuries and limb loss. The specially designed boots, produced to exacting German military standards, incorporate advanced technology to protect vital lower limbs during hazardous missions. The donation comprises 100 pairs of boots, worth 2.5 million baht, for border patrol soldiers and a further 20 pairs, valued at 500,000 baht, for EOD teams, a total contribution of 3 million baht. The boots will be custom-manufactured at a specialist facility and delivered within 30 days. “This initiative is aimed at safeguarding the lives and well-being of our troops,” said Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit. “By providing this advanced protective gear, Mr Thaksin hopes to reduce the risk of life-changing injuries and support the brave men and women serving on the front lines.” Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-16 -

Accident Elderly Motorcyclist Killed After Crossing in Front of Mercedes
Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A 76-year-old motorcycle taxi driver died after his bike was struck by a white Mercedes-Benz in Panat Nikhom district, Chonburi, on the afternoon of 15 August. Police and rescue workers were called to the scene on Route 349 (Panat Nikhom towards Nong Chak) at around 14:30. Emergency responders found the victim, named as Mr Prasart, with catastrophic injuries, his right leg severed below the knee, his left arm almost completely detached and severe head and chest trauma. Despite attempts of CPR and urgent transfer to Panat Nikhom Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The impact sent debris scattering across the road. The Mercedes was found in the far right lane with front-end damage, including a shattered windscreen. The victim’s black and silver Honda Wave motorcycle was lying nearby. Witness Mr Sumpan told police he was waiting to make a U-turn near a petrol station when he saw the motorcycle cross directly into the path of the oncoming car. CCTV footage confirmed the bike had cut across the road, leaving the driver of the Mercedes no time to avoid the crash. The victim’s wife, Mrs Payung, 68, said her husband regularly transported schoolchildren in the mornings before returning home to rest. She was informed of the crash by a neighbour and rushed to the scene, only to find her husband critically injured. “He was the breadwinner of the family. I don’t know what we will do now,” she said tearfully. Police recorded the scene and are questioning witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-08-16
