Call me cynical, but it looks like an excellent way to harvest working email addresses.

Extra spam anyone?

My thoughts exactly!

changing password makes sense for future protection but equally important it can be to check if someone has had accessed your emails.

No, I tested my mail address 6 moths ago and I can confirm that NO new spammers showed up.

But perhaps there is someone who can actually explain, how the test itself technically would work????

There are databases around (obtained by hackers and these databases are for some people worth a lot of money) that just contain email addresses and their passwords (or maybe even more)). And this company uses one of these (or more) databases to check your email against.

You are right MJCM, see here sources http://tinyurl.com/6gufmhn

and FAQ=

My email came back clean, does that mean my passwords weren't stolen?

No. Unfortunately it only means that they weren't stolen and published as part of any of the breaches listed here. If you don't already do so, it's good practice to change passwords regularly just in case.

Interesting. .says one of my email addresses was compromised a year ago. This is a forwarder email and I rarely login direct. I still change the random password regularly.

Your email, username, and password have been compromised at least 1 time(s). The most recent recorded occurrence is June 25, 2011. You should change all your passwords as soon as possible. Ensure that each password is at least 10 characters in length and is a combination of random upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not re-use the same password across multiple sites!
