Hua Hin Marriott To Close?

Featured Replies

I am sure the sign outside the Marriot said that the hotel and spa were closed permanently

so i looked on agoda, and no availabilty there for any dates this year......

are they really closing down? last time i was there about 3 months ago they were fully booked.......

The Hotel is owned by Minor Corporation, Bill Heinecke. He owns all Thailand 4 Seasons properties, Anantara, Marriot Pattaya, JW Marriot Phuket, Pizza Co and many more.

Couple of years ago he kicked Marriot out of Bangkok Riverside, closed, major refurb and reopened Anantara Riverside. Maybe he'll do similar in Hua In. Which of course will make 2 Anantaras in Hua Hin

The rumor mill says it's going to be a Best Western.

The concern of the above about the Marriot begs the question, Why?

Doubt any of them have staid there, so whats the problem.

No big deal, this happens all the time. Lease ends and tenant or owner or both don't want to renew for various reasons. It will not be left vacant its a good property. It will re-brand and open again. HH Hilton was not always the Hilton, it was built and opened as the Melia (Spanish outfit) then after a few years they sold/leased to Hilton.

Anway, makes no difference there are lots of hotels in HH and this one closing for a few months in off-season for re-furb is not a biggie.

The Marriott HH was something else before, a Thai hotel, same as the Hilton was Melia, can't remember what it was.

End of lease, 2002-2012. For the renovation cost they probably calculated there were better deals around. Out of ~ 600 hotels worldwide operating under the brand, Marriott owns only half a dozen. All franchizes.

Stayed at the Marriott HH in October 2004, you could tell it is not by Marriott standards. Rooms were (in size) rather like 1,000THB Pattaya "Welcome Inn" or similar patronaged by Russian and Chinese package tourists. The fittings were fine throughout and staff as expected.

For low season rock bottom price (3,600THB) it was hardly a value even at that price. Regular high season price was 9-12,000THB, a serious rip off.

The Hilton was originally designed and built for the Sheraton Group, but they never took it on and it opened as the Melia.

There was a major accident during the construction, at least three fatalities and rumours of more.

No idea who terminated who, but I am sure this hotel was not doing much for the Marriott brand. Stayed once a few years ago and resolved never again, common areas/pool not bad but the rooms (we had one of the alleged top ones) really not upto much 3 at most 4 star. Sofitel ,hilton ,hyatt , intercon, all way better. Best western ,if it's them , can probably make it work for their customer base.

I can't think any brand can make the rooms any larger.

We were on the ground floor (our request, for baby prem) easy in and out. Not sure now but I seem to recall there were no elevators for those staying at the upper floors (altogether 4 floors in the main building). My memory could be failing me, 8 years have passed.

And yes, that Marriott could be the worst one I have ever stayed with.
