I am hoping that a member/menbers of this forum can offer some advice in trying to locate an old Teak house that can be taken down and re located to Koh Phangan . I am looking for something in the 100+ sq mtr range 2 bedroom or larger any idea's / comments would be welcome. I would also consider a teak home manufacturer if anyone knows of a good one .

Search the forum, this subject has been done to death several times so there's loads of good info out there. In a nutshell: it's fairly easy to buy old teak houses in the rural areas of Thailand and they're not expensive, transporting them outside of the village where they are is difficult and requires a police permit (which you are unlikely to get) or the services of someone who knows someone etc. The issue of transportation has to do with the movement of teak wood which is very dificult as a result of illegal logging etc.

Did not realize that police permits were required for an old house thanks for letting me know I know one of the retired police chiefs in Bangkok will have to give him a call !!!

Just a word of caution many people think these old houses are a good deal when usually they are not, until you tear it apart and find out the condition of the wood you have no idea of the value. A thai lady I know just did this and could have bought new teak wood cheaper due to the material loss from termite damage to the wood that you cant see until its dismantled, she wasnt happy. At the very least I wouldnt put up a baht until it was dismantled and inspected.

Unfortunately you can rarely do that since the house usually represents someones home hence the deal needs to be completed before dismantling the house. But teak is generally termite and pest resistant so there's not a huge chance of finding out the woods more damaged than was previously thought.

Teak might be termite resistant but they still eat it over time and thais do nothing in the way of preventative maint. to stop it. Most of these houses are very old and you cant see the timbers under the floor or where they are covered by other wood and thats where you will find them. Like I said the lady next to me thought she was getting a good deal too. Believe what you want but thailand termites are not wiki termites.
