Coming To Bangkok First Time: Seeking Advice

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I am planning a work visit to Bangkok, probably for several months, and I am looking for suggestions on where to live. I have no knowledge of the housing situation there so any advice will be welcome.

Is it difficult to find temporary housing there? How about shared accommodations? It would be nice to arrive and live with people, which is always a good way to settle in. I am coming to Bangkok as an exploration, to consider a relocation there, at least temporarily for a year or two.

Are there parts of the city that are more 'western friendly' than others? I am from Canada originally, but have lived in Brazil on and off for several years, and have traveled in India and Nepal, so I am comfortable with traveling in a foreign country.

Price range and size of accommodation is always a good place to start.

Well, a shared accommodation is just a room, so a room in an apartment, I don't know what size... But as far as price range, cheap is better, but from what I've seen surfing around for the past couple hours, it looks like somewhere between $200 and $500 is going to land me a decent shared situation.

I prefer shared because it is enjoyable to meet and live with new people. But Ii don't know how easy that is to find in Bangkok. I could go for a bachelor pad if there is anything in that price range...

You could get a shared place around Sukhumvit for 5k a month.

actually could find many studios for 5,000 baht a month.

submaniac thanks for the price tip, and sscsamui, for the suggestion on craigslist.

Appreciate the help :)

If you want to live in the thick of it in downtown sukhumvit cheaply the Rama 4 end of Sukhumvit 22 has a lot of rooms 2-3k/month no aircon, 3-5k/month with air. Good option if you want to "go native". I noticed a lot of youngsters stay at a place called Nonsi Residence (Soi Nawin). Cheapest downtown condo probably Sukhumvit Suites (Soi 13).

Hello, thanks a lot for these suggestions. I think Nonsi Residence looks like my best option.
