Music legend David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after an 18 month battle with cancer.

The news has shocked Bowie's enormous fanbase as the artist only just released his latest album Blackstar on Friday.

A statement on Bowie's website says that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

David Bowie released 25 albums across his almost 50-year career, including a string of ten albums in the 1970s that are among the most influential albums of all time. He was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996.

There were many influential aspects to Bowie's career. The personas he adopted – Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke and Major Tom – became famous in themselves. His androgynous appearance was unlike any other in mainstream culture. His acting in films like The Man Who Fell to Earth, plays like The Elephant Man and TV shows like Extras earned him acclaim.

But most importantly, Bowie wrote some of the best songs of all time. And he wrote them in many different genres. He pushed boundaries and encouraged others to do the same.

Stay tuned for more inflormation and tributes to this legendary artist as they come to hand.
