Five police officers transferred after gambling den raid

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Five officers from Chok Chai Police Station in Bangkok were transferred to inactive posts yesterday for neglecting their duty after a gambling den was revealed to operate in areas they were responsible for.

The transfers came after police from the Economic Crime Division and Central Investigation Bureau raided a gambling den on Friday night on Lat Phrao Soi 71 in Lat Phrao, which is under the station's jurisdiction.

The transferred policemen were Police Colonel Setthasak Yimcharoen (superintendent of Chok Chai Station); Pol Lt-Colonel Theppharat Sakulmeerit; Pol Lt-Colonel Khajornphong Jitphakphum; Pol Lt-Colonel Jirawat Yotkrahome; and Pol Major Banthoon Thepsuwan.

The transfers coincided with National Police Day celebrations yesterday.

Pol Colonel Sarot Soonsap, deputy chief of Metropolitan Police Division 4, was appointed acting superintendent of the station while a fact-finding panel was set up to look into the issue.

Police arrested 71 gamblers and seized Bt200,000 from the den. They also found records of football bets worth hundreds of thousands of baht. People living nearby said the den had been operating for months and that many people entered and exited the place every evening.

The Economic Crime Division was obviously upset at the lack of economics. They didn't get their cut!!

Transferred, as in soccer, changed club for a fee.

why do they write these stories in such a way that the only explanation for the lack of punishment us so obvious that thry must have paid.

While the morally corrupt and ultra-criminal gamblers are sitting in a cell in chains saying, 'why do they keep talking about 200,000? I thought we had two million on the table'

It does seem a little strange that 71 gamblers would be in possession of less than B3000 each on average, somewhat less than I would expect to take with me if I were to go on a gambling night out. OTOH perhaps they sell their gambling chips by credit card, which should lead to an information trail and many more charges.

BTW either Chok Chai Police Station has a huge roster of BIB (as in thousands) or it is very heavily overstaffed with senior officers.

Why are they always transferred to inactive posts for not doing the job for which they are paid to do ??

What's wrong with kicked out of the police force with loss of all benefits !

Out to pasture in Chockchai. Quite apt really.

These stories are far better than those blasted soaps....and what is an inactive post anyway, since they were already inactive in doing their job to began with....from one inactive post to another; go figure!coffee1.gifsad.png

What is slightly puzzling is that 5 cops get transferred, one would have thought that the 'buck stops' with the head honcho? Or should the headline translate to something like, "Top Cop and 4 underlings caught sanctioning gaming den".

Then a fact-finding panel is set up to 'look into it' one would hope that if the panel is serious the first thing they will look into is the bank accounts and assets of the 5 transferred cops and their finding be made public.

What is more likely to happen is that they will take up 'inactive posts' see their time out on full pay until retirement and then receive a full pension, and no one will bat an eyelid.

There first language is Thai

Why do you insist on knocking their attempts to speak / learn a second language?

Placement in an inactive post still comes with full pay and benefits with no work and no responsibilities. How can I get one of those jobs? Do I need a work permit?

I seem to remember that the chief of metropolitan police trumpeted out loudly months ago he could guarantee (yawn!) there were no illegal gambling dens operating in Bangkok. guitar.gif

And then there was of course that esteemed deputy prime minister who assured the public (yawn again!) he would rid Bangkok of all illegal gambling dens in no time at all. guitar.gif

No the police payment is low. Most of the income is from collecting bribe money. And that is cut off on inactive posts. So it is a punishment.

Transferred actually describes it perfectly. Not demoted, punished, removed. Transferred from a football sense suggests a negotiation and payment. Absolutely correct meaning.

Pay a fee to get moved instead of fired.

A fitting punishment, for failing to give the casino sufficient warning, of the impending raid ! wink.png

I don't believe in any raid that wasn't initiated by Chuwit. :(

Are you sure that you are responding to the correct post as I cannot relate the two??

Or maybe 5 new gambling establishments!

Oh No, not the dreaded transfer..... bah.gif

Because they are experienced and they need them to man the next gambling den or casino.

That way the inactive post will become inactive again when they are moved to the new casino which is now inactive until these police activate it again.

Traded would be better phrasing. 4 or 5 big guys move on and 15 or 20 guys are drafted in at the bottom to fill up to compensate

What they actually get is the equivalent of a blood transfusion. They get seen by a police doctor from Korat, and come up cleaner than clean. New identity, new card, new boss to supply, and 'hey-presto' a new cup of tea! giggle.gif

Any news on the Gambling Den Chuvit tried to visit a few months ago? The one where locals came out in force to stop him going to see it because it didn't exist.

The policeman were probably regulars in the gambling dens. coffee1.gif

You cannot get an inactive post job.....you have to buy the original job then do wrong to qualify. I wonder if you can buy a position from inactive to a job promotion ???

The poor police men they must be devastated and with every one being against them on TV what a shame they maybe genuinely never noticed that there was a gambling den on there area, possibly to trusting of people after all the years of loyal service and dedication it counts for nothing, and during the National Police Day celebrations is nothing sacred now.

Unfortunate Police men Transferred to inactive posts the indignity of such a Harsh punishment this is just another blow to the poor police colonel’s and criminals could now run rampant once they know that all the top boys are away.

nothing changes sometimes the police move on to another area then start a fresh.the tea money is always available for them.whatever they done to be moved

one question: why does thailand not legalize legal casino's? money for the government, stop the crooks a bit (police and maffia which in many cases are the same) ...

thai people want to gamble anyway...

same same stupid as with rice pledging, where middle persons get rich and farmers get f-u-...
