What's With The Scarcity Of The Nexus 7?

Featured Replies

It seems very strange that buying a Nexus 7 in Thailand is akin to winning the lottery. Neither Invadeit or 7Shop have them in stock and can't say when they will be available. If you are in the market for a tablet (as I am) and you can't buy your No 1 preference, well, you move on to No 2. Very poor marketing IMO.

This was the response from Invadeit:

I'm afraid we are not able to get the product because the Nexus 7 is in serious shortage here in Thailand, and has been ever since it was released. So only when Asus contacts us to say they have some for us can we get them, and right now we don't have any in stock and neither does Asus Thailand.

The regular price on our website is 9,800 baht.

We ask Asus pretty much every day for it, but they have no idea. The 3G version was supposed to have been released here in Thailand this past week, but now they have so far changed it to the 3rd week of January. It really amazes me how Asus can have this bad a supply for what is probably their most popular product ever.

I think the first set of grey-market imports sold out quite quickly.

Asus Thailand have localized the product, albeit the N7/16 GB/WiFi version, and I have seen it in many shops which sell Asus computer gear. 9,900 THB.

What's your second choice?

A Tab 2/7 with 3G is about the same price, but screen resolution is not up to the N7.

I assume you are talking "many shops" in BKK? I have yet to see one in Pattaya. In fact, there's very little choice outside of Samsung and IPad.

Yes, I was referring the Bangkok metropolis. Maybe start expanding your search - look in different and unusual places? Look in any larger mall/store which has electronics/PCs. I suspect there are some languishing on the shelves. I'll keep a look out this week and follow-up if/where I see these.

New products, like the N7/3G, require localization, and this can take time - especially for models with radios.

Is the N7/16 GB/WiFi the only tablet you are considering? What is your budget? Can you ask someone in the U.S. to purchase one for you? And then maybe hand-carry, or ship?

Believe me, I have searched high and low in Pattaya. The biggest computer mall, Tucom, has never even heard of the Nexus 7. The other two choices would be the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and the IPad mini. No, no one in the US that can bring one for me, but I can buy through Ebay at a premium price.

Look in different places - not computer malls/shops.

Powerbuy? http://www.powerbuy....x?CategoryID=24

Maybe have a Thai person trawl the Thai forums?

Powerbuy has very limited Tablet choices, IPad and Samsung, that's it. It shouldn't be that hard to buy a new product on the market, especially when they are directly competing with the other big two.

Did you follow the link? Powerbuy appears to have the N7.

Not sure what to say about how hard it can be to buy a popular product of which the first allotments have sold out?

If you want it, you may be able to find it, that's all I am suggesting. If you just want to lament how hard it is, then carry on.

Did you click on the Buy Now, or What Stores? Nothing. I was lamenting in the hope that someone would be able to point me in the right direction to purchase one in Thailand.

Bg C Nakorn Pathom, second floor. About ten thousand and some change. Saw it there two weekends ago.

Try Droidsans.com

In the for sale section. There are normally 2 or 3 2nd hand.

Great if you live in Nakorn Pathom, but I live in Pattaya.

I think, but could be wrong, that the inference here is that perhaps you could find one in your neighborhood Big C? I'm guessing there is a Big C in/near Pattaya? This is sort of what I was suggesting with my previous comment:

Just to put my search abilities to rest, I have looked in Big C, Tesco, Powerbuy, Tucom, and shopping centres. So, I don't know what you mean by "look in different and unusual places". Garden shops?

Rayong, Sri Racha, Chonburi, Chachoengsao, etc..

Or do you just want someone else to go look for you?

No, what I wanted was some helpful advice instead of smartarse comments. Someone who perhaps had bought a Nexus 7 locally, not in Chiang Mai or Udon.

The device you seek is in high demand and limited supply. If you really, really want one, you need to go and check the posted outlets in the regional towns. When the last google nexus smart phone came out, they were scarcer than hens teeth in Bangkok but someone managed to buy one in Khon Kaen.

You started the smart arse with your 'Garden Shop' response to some decent advice.

Looking in different and unusual places, is decent advice? I had already stated two or three times that I'd looked in all the IT outlets plus the malls, plus the major department stores. My point was that you aren't going to find a Nexus 7 at a mom and pop store or any other "unusual" place. BTW, I never asked where I could buy one, only that they were scarce.

It's not poor marketing, its just they don't want to steal marketshare of $400 - $500 samsung/asus tablets.

I still think over $300 is too much for 7" nexus tablet. $200 was hot price. Considering you can buy an Ainol Hero 10 tablet with 10" IPS screen (7" also available for much cheaper) and dual core 1.5 ghz cpu, two cameras (front and back) and 16Gb flash. Just no GPS, but for $189 usd only.

You have been looking extensively in Pattaya for something that you don't actually want to buy. I see. I misunderstood, sorry.

Sent from the side of Nong Sim lake with an Asus eePad Transformer TF201 thingumabob.

According to the GPSSiam Store web site they have the Nexus 7 8GB model for B9,500. They supposedly have two stores in Bangkok, one on the east side of the river and one on the west side. I've bought from the store on the west side which is not too far from the Bang Khae Mall. The GPSSiam store is on the corner of Phuttamathon Sai 2 Rd and Puttamathon Sai 2 Soi 10...right next to the bus stop. See this Google Maps Link.

At the store they primarily sell specialty/electric motor bikes but the owner--who speaks very good English and also attended college in the U.S.--does have some tablets/smartphones in stock at his office in the store...but it's primarily a mail order operation for tablets/smartphones. Phone number to the store is 080-256-1001.

I was also looking for the Nexus 7. Try this link.

Thanks, but they are asking 3000 baht more than the going price of 9900 baht. That's for the 32gb model.

Maybe it's because they're in short supply locally so it's a sellers market...

One on craigslist, 8,300b.

Just a tip, You just might have to go look in another city to find what you are looking for. There is no sense of business here and they will not go out of their way to help you. I wanted a 100 gal pressure tank and had to drive 300 klicks to get one when I needed it. No local business would help, in a large city.....

I think that this is the best that you can do right now. I have also looked around Pattaya but to no avail. Just been through Schipol airport and Shanghai and the Nexus was not in any of the duty freeTech stores, so not much hope in Thailand. maybe a world shortage?

Sold 800,000 plus worldwide in November with sales of over a million expected this month so they are available and selling well somewhere, but maybe not Thailand it seems.

I said I never asked, not that I didn't want to buy. See the difference?
