How To Get To Chiang Mai From Ubon Ratchatani (Airasia No More)

Featured Replies

Hi

I was planning to fly to Chiang Mai from Ubon Ratchantani (where i live) on an AirAsia direct flight - hmmm. They have now cancelled this service. If i fly via ThaiAir i have to go via Bangkok with 3 hour wait at BKK = long trip

Anyone travelled by train or bus?? Im after some reasonably comfortable options!!

Thanks

Marty

I have not done the Ubon- Chang Mai route, but I have done Surin - Chang Mai (which originates in Ubon).

This was with Nakorn Chai Air and it was very comfortable, VIP, 2 free Meals.

Hi Marty...There is no train from Ubon to Chiang Mai however there is a couple of bus options. There is the regular bus service and there is NakonChai Air which is the better option. Very nice bus and I would say more safe than the regular bus company. You can get a ticket from the main bus station in Ubon or go to their own bus station in Warin just over the main bridge on the right. Its about a 15 hour trip. Cheers

Flight details

Take the 2.55pm thai airways flight out of CM will see you in Ubon at 6.35pm for a total travel time of 3h and 40m.

*edit* sorry just realised that you are looking at Ubon to CM and not the other way around.

Instead of paying 8,000 baht with Thai go with Nok air. 5.30pm depart Ubon arrive 6.25pm then hop another Nok at 8.15pm to arrive 9.25pm for travel time of 4 hours for 2,300 baht all in.

Air Asia have an almostg identical flight but it leaves Ubon at 9.30am and gets into Chiang Mai 12.40pm. 3 hours and 10 minutes. Of course you only need the first leg to be 30 minutes late and you are going to have trouble.

The bus is torture. I'm driving Chiang Mai to Ubon tomorrow. Many of the roads are 4 lane now. Not such a bad 13 hour drive, but I'm weird like that.

I believe that Kan Air is still flying from Chiang Mai to Khon Kaen on two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). It seems to be under 2 hours and is B2590 each way. So perhaps a flight from CM and then the bus from KK to Ubon is another option.

The Nakornchai Air bus does not go via Khon Kaen. It goes via Surin, Chaiyaphum, Phitsanulok. "meals" are at Chaiyaphum and Phitsanulok (recently they've been handing out sandwiches at Pi-lok, which are a great improvement on the cooked meals.

It all depends how well you can sleep on a long-distance bus!

You can go by train. Day train to somewhere like Ayudya then the night train coming up from Bangkok. Book the night train in advance to get a sleeper.
