Crime Illegal Migrant Crackdown on Koh Phangan: Surat Thani Police Arrest Workers & Employers

Police in Surat Thani have launched a targeted crackdown on illegal migrant workers and their employers on Koh Phangan, arresting multiple individuals in an operation aimed at tackling illegal immigration and associated offences. The special operation, carried out by the Provincial Investigation Division of Surat Thani (PIDS), was led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Charoenchai Boonkliang, with support from the Special Task Force Unit stationed at the Sri Thanu Forward Operations Centre on Koh Phangan. The raids were conducted under the directive of Region 8 Provincial Police, covering the enforcement period from 19–25 June. Authorities raided eight locations across the island, primarily targeting labour camps where migrant workers were believed to be employed illegally. A number of Myanmar nationals were arrested for offences including illegal entry into the country, working without the proper permits and other violations of immigration and labour laws. Several employers were also detained for hiring undocumented workers. Police Lt. Col. Charoenchai stated that the operation was part of a broader effort to tighten control over illegal labour and cross-border crime. All those arrested will be prosecuted according to th law and the illegal workers will be deported after legal proceedings conclude. The crackdown aligns with national policy directives from Police Lieutenant General Surapong Thanomjit, Commander of Region 8 Police, alongside other senior officers including Police Major General Pornchai Khajornklin and Police Colonel Parinya Tandhasuwan. A road crash occurred on the morning of 25 June in Chachoengsao province, when a yellow passenger songthaew driver, veered out of control during heavy rain and crossed into oncoming traffic, crashing into both a six-wheeled lorry and a ten-wheeled truck. Report New Cannabis Regulation: Prescription Required for Sales
I am sure the cannabis shops have prepared for this already and will not affect them as badly as predicted. The police have surely set up some kind of plan for this also. Perhaps directing the shops to doctors on their list that they will overlook or perhaps by demanding more brown envelopes. Either way, I do not see all the cannabis shops closing for this new law. Just as any law in Thailand, it will be enforced and then forgotten until it is time to get the envelope.- 1
