Did Barnabas Collins ever get his girl? I can't remember much.

Between discovering drugs and getting sent away to reform school around that time, Barnabas Collin's love life seems to have escaped my attention. :o

A checkered past there, UG. I never thought of you as one of Thailand's undersirables. :D:D

All in my past.

I'm a solid citizen now. :o

Nope, not watching any soaps, yank or pom. Live's too short for that tabloid drivel.

Soaps,SOAPS...........................Coronation Street, Emmerdale,Eastenders,Eldorado, Crossroads are/were soaps. You poll was about <deleted>. :D

Absolutely correct Mr (Sponsor) Lampshade.

Such complete bias for the <deleted> across the pond is typical of too many of the yanks who post here! :D !

Only joking....... :o

Ich bin sehr proud zum being Deutsch. Besser als ein Englander! :D:D:D

Edit: Is German allowed in Bedlam?? :D I might want to take it up full time! :D

Eastenders when i can see it, otherwise i have to watch those crappy american bold and ugly things and the swiss ones we don't even mention

by the way how do i get my photo on the members photo thingy - that looks like its gonna turn out like a real home-made TV soap opera!!

I think Reality Shows are the new Soap Operas, and just as pathetic. :D

One of the stations here has started showing General Hospital episodes. Just watching the advertisements for it made my stomache churn.

It surprises me how many people live their lives vicariously through shows like that :o

I like "Lost"; That's pretty much a soap opera. :o

Is that on Sophon cable ?

(and further to that, is Pattaya the only place that DOES NOT have any kind of TV listing guide ?)

(I suppose I should generalize that more by replacing Pattaya with "Thailand")

GoodPost.gif AMEN to that Kerry. Clapping.gif

Soap operas started out on the radio. My mother used to listen to "All My Children" and "Just Plain Bill" in the early 1950's.

Here in Thailand, the soap operas bug the s*** out of me. In one episode, inevitably, there will be one killing, two ghosts, four female handslaps, maybe a wrestling match, maybe someone is pushed into the klong or the east swimming pool, etc. Most of the actors are whiter than a Swede in December, or the working class guys have more facial hair and tatoos than a Brooklyn stevedore. The rich Thais in the soap opera have mansions in the Bill Gates category.

I tell any Thai who will listen, "Life in Thailand is not like soap opera...YET. Thais do not do that...YET. Man not rape girl every day...YET. Thai not kill Thai...YET." Finally, they get the pun.

Even without the bilingual "yet" joke, the fact remains that violence on the media is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Kids watch enough of that, and they understand they can claw, slap, screw, wrestle and kill themselves straight into a mansion. Mansions such as the "Bangkok Hilton."

All I know is that the first two years are on DVD.

I rented the first year and got REALLY hooked, and I've been searching frantically for Season 2.

Luckily, a friend just brought it back from the Nam and lent it to me, so I'm all excited!

I agree, never heard of any of the ones listed - should rename it as American Soaps? not real soaps.

Good post, PB. But you have to ask yourself, why are soaps so popular? While they're abhorrent to people such as us there are certainly enough folks who love them. In which case, is the media producing self-fulfilling prophecies or are they simply providing programing in response to what so many people want? There's no way to know which is the case for sure. I'll grant that it's not a beneficial influence on the youngsters.

... you have to ask yourself, why are soaps so popular?

Another good question - why is Jerry Springer so popular? :o

I think it has to do with people revelling in the misery of others, so that they can view themselves as superior to the poor wretches that appear on those kinds of shows.

Some of those shows were simply staged acts designed to boost ratings (remember the "Geraldo" garbage ? Almost every episode would feature fights and chairs being thrown. They had a crew of beefy "security" guys hanging around the edge of the stage, ready to intervene at just the right moment. Geralso even had his nose broken by a chair on one show. Now he's a "Senior Fox Corresponant", tells you something about that stations standards :o )

A sad reflection on the mentality of the public. No wonder Bush got re-elected. :D

And talking about popular TV personalities, a better question is - why is Boonie so popular? :o:D

Because we love ya!

Have to admit, it seems to be one of the more popular topics in this forum (among certain people).

Way more threads dealing with US politics than the latest happenings on "As the Stomache Churns", or "General Horseshital" :o

Politics is a soap opera nonetheless. It's just the more preferred soap opera among the 'educated minds.' :o

So, which comes first: the media showing kids that violence is normal; or kids already knowing it? I can't quote you the source, but studies have shown that when television and other modern media full of violence is introduced to indigenous societies, the rates of violent crime skyrocket within 20 years. Kids cannot separate reality from acting (neither could some adults!).

Season 2 started here on AXN (UBC)

I didn't like Season 1 that much, even though the last few episodes were good.

That show is a fraud, and I kept watching it, even though nothing important is happening.

  • 1 year later...

Need more choices there. None that I watch from above. To be honest, I'm lost in Lost. Don't know what's up with that show. People get crazy watcing in and I mean CRAZY watching it. I'm sure it is entertaining but he** it's lost entertainment. :o

Now, I catch pretty much things online or DVD. Like I can watch a whole thing at once, hate to wait til next week, you know what I mean.

Prisonbreak and Heroes now are my fav. Used to watch 24 but sh** this one man hero thing for Jack gets too much became real corny.
