you're right about it going to the bank hansum, but you're way wrong about mascherano. he's the best in the world in his position and it's no coincidence that the clubs who want him are barca and inter. he's superb.

Funny, I don't see Macherano on this list:

Joe Hart (Birmingham), Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Antonio Valencia (Manchester United), Darren Fletcher (Manchester United), James Milner (Aston Villa), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has flown to South Africa to try to complete the signing of Fernando Torres, with sources telling Soccernet he is willing to pay up to £55 million.

Fernando Torres: On World Cup duty with Spain

Liverpool are believed to value Torres at around £70 million and refused to respond to speculation over his future until they had a new manager in place. Now Roy Hodgson has succeeded Rafa Benitez, he is evaluating the situation regarding five big-name stars at Anfield who are reviewing their own futures.

Torres has made it clear that he is focusing on the World Cup, but with the tournament drawing to a close, talks between all the interested parties are believed to be underway.

Barcelona are also reported to be interested but they are struggling to raise the funds. Torres himself is also unsure he wants to return to Spain at the moment.

A well-placed source told Soccernet: "Abramovich has authorised the bid of £50 million, and he's not expected to go much higher than that ... [but] I would think he might go to £55 million.

"Without any other creditable bidder, he sees no reason to go any higher. It's quite clear that Liverpool could get more from Manchester City, and the player could earn more from Manchester City, but the player doesn't want to go there. He wants Champions League football and the chance to win the major honours which he can do at Chelsea.2

The final cost were Torres to move to Stamford Bridge could top £100 million, as Chelsea will make the striker the highest paid player in the Premier League topping £200,000-a-week with his bonuses. A five-year contract would be worth £50 million to the player.

fuc_k's sake james you're a tedious get sometimes.

mascherano didn't have his best season last season. he is still arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world. that is the reason that barcelona and inter both would like to sign him. if you don't rate him you're displaying a gigantic lack of football knowledge. that concise enough for you? the PFA team has no relevance here so i don't know why you brought the bloody thing up.

oh and frank lampard scored 30 goals from midfield last season as chelsea won the league and cup double, but apparently darren fletcher had a better season than him. by morons, for morons.

Hmm ok Stevie: I know you love Mascherano and maybe on his day he is a good defensive midfielder but let's face it compared to Fletcher or Essien he is pretty much one dimensional don't you agree?

I personally rate Essien the best of the bunch.

Tedious, you making excuses all the time mate, why not blame the Americans for Mascherano's shit season?

Posted

'one-dimensional' in footballers is often a good thing james. ruud van nistelrooy is pretty one dimensional in that he just scores goals galore. mascherano is the best defensive midfielder in the game and has taken the specialist job to a new level of mobility which the previous best, claude makelele, didn't have. your comparing fletcher and essien to him shows that you don't really know what a defensive midfielder is or does.

'making excuses'? from the poster who brought you the nonsensical PFA team as proof of how good a player is. i could tell you to fuc_k off out of the liverpool thread with your trolling nonsense but i'll settle for you again looking a bit daft and not knowing much what you're talking about eh? ;)

Mascherano is an excellent player but when exactly did he become a better player than Essien? I've also never heard or read anywhere that he's the best defensive midfield in the world. What i would say is he's the second best, possibly in the premier league.

Essien is of course the best defensive midfielder in the Premiership. Dunno how Stevie can describe him otherwise.....but yeah Mascherano is definitely a cracking player..

Fletcher aint no defensive midfielder.....he's a 'substitute midfielder' from what I can make out.

essien isn't a defensive midfielder, his remit is much more than that. he's a box to box player who covers far more of the pitch than mascherano does. mikel is chelsea's defensive midfielder and last season, on some occasions, ballack and essien both played there.

essien's a better all round footballer and midfielder than mascherano, sure. but as a specialist defensive holding midfielder there is none better in the game than mascherano. his reading of the game, timing of tackles, general workrate and covering of his fullbacks are all incredible.

Wow he sounds great Stevie but we've already got two holding midfielders. Who's he being sold on to?

Even realising the financial situation at Anfield surely Hodgson has been given some transfer funds of some sort? He must be insane otherwise....whatever its a massive rebuilding job needed even without the inevitable loss of Mascherano and Torres ...maybe Gerrard too......I mean the last two cannot be replaced but any word on players going the other way?

we've signed a really talented kid from charlton, jonjo shelvey, and we're getting the serbian lad jovanovic in on a bosman, and he looks good.

hodgson could sell players for about £80m this summer and still not get a transfer budget of more than about £10m. we won't be doing any real rebuilding until we have a new owner who is prepared to pay H&G's ludicrous valuation and put some real investment into the club.

Liverpool have got to cut their cloth accordingly, as of now this is your rebuilding.

I could never stoop so low as to wanting an Arab or Russian to come along and pour millions of his nations oil/gas/mineral wealth into my club ... At least when Newcastle fans have paid back for Ashleys and Shepherd/Halls <deleted> ups in about 10 years theyll still be a club with a little bit of self respect and integrity ... something Chelsea and City no longer have.

There is more to football then competing for 4th.

nah, we're not in rebuilding mode yet - far from it. we're still in being systematically dismantled mode and while i would never necessarily want a sugar daddy, we need one now who is rich enough to get the club back on an even keel by wiping out the debt loaded on by these frauds, able to fund a new stadium and also have some spare cash to invest in the squad. that's how in the shit we are, we're way beyond anything like newcastle's plight.

agree with your last line though for what it's worth.

Who do we have lined up for left back? I understand Insua is a done deal to Fiorentina! for 5 Mil

Left side is not looking good is it?

I see Reira has made it to the pre season training !

And to add to this, word is this sale was not sanctioned while Rafa was around and neither when Roy took over ! I can see fire sales coming!

And I keep reading about Purslow being the only one involved in all and any transfer talks

Exclusive: Reds sign Joe Cole (just came up on the official site moments ago)

Liverpool FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year deal.

The England midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.

Cole becomes the club's second signing of the summer after Milan Jovanovic.

The 28-year-old arrives from Chelsea, where he won three league titles and two FA Cups during a seven-year spell.

He is a product of the West Ham youth system and has represented his country 56 times, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Must admit very surprised as he was linked to a few clubs! could be a great singing. Certainly a good replacement for Yossi.

Liverpool win race to sign Cole.

BBC

If Hodgson plays him in his best positon of central midfield, you've got yourself a good aquisition.

If he feels like it, Jovanovic can make life hel_l for every defender in the premier league

yeah he looks a real player jovanovic doesn't he?

not entirely over-enamoured by the joe cole signing, he's ok but hardly a world beater. better than nothing though i suppose.

A lot of positive buzz on the LFC forums about the Cole signing.

What strikes me the most is how quiet this whole deal was done! Reminds me of the Liverpool of old all done behind closed doors. And if reports are correct then well done Purslow for putting this one together at least!

Gerrard and Torres were very public about the club signing quality over the summer -lets hope this convinces them to stay as its more than just a big name signing but a statement of intent perhaps?

Our attacking options are looking interesting right now because they can all play in various advanced roles. (Gerrard, Aquilani, Maxi, Cole, Kuyt, Jovanovic, Babel, Lucas)

I can still see Riera going to be honest. So heres hoping some of the funds will be available for a decent left back and if Masch goes which seems very likely now then we get a decent replacement for midfield.

Seems to me that Joe Cole in and Yossi Benayoun out to Chelsea

I would have Joe Cole everyday

Looks like a great swap

Reds re-sign Aurelio

Liverpool have confirmed they have re-signed Fabio Aurelio after the defender put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club.

art_fabio_aurelio_2.jpg

The Brazilian appeared to have brought his Reds career to an end after leaving Anfield following the expiry of his contract in May.

However, Aurelio was offered the chance to earn a new deal with the club by boss Roy Hodgson and, after impressing both the technical staff and medical team at Melwood, has agreed a contract until 2012.

Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I asked the club to find out whether Fabio had found a new club.

"When we ascertained that he hadn't, we invited him back to Melwood so both myself and my staff, and the medical team could properly assess the player.

"We were both very impressed and I am delighted we were able to re-sign Fabio."

Aurelio was included in the Liverpool travelling party that set off for Sunday's friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier today.
