Koh Phangan Is Now Little France

Featured Replies

Just came back from a two week break in Koh Phagnan.

Completely shocked at how many French people are living there. Entire families (young ones in tow). I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but does anyone know the reason for this?

The majority of falang business owners I encountered there were French. I actually think they might outnumber the Thai people there?

I have been going there for around 7 years and do not remember things being this way?

Great perhaps the place will improve, but next we'll have the Thai complaining how falang families are breeding at an unfair rate and stealing their population quotas and blockade the island

France is one of the Western countries where the decomposition of the social structure is the most advanced. Think America without the drive and the corporate culture. Women have a horrible attitude, which is also fueled by the systematic skirt-chasing of the men. Egos are boosted into overdrive, so everyone affects to ignore each other and everyone ends up terribly frustrated, maybe even more so than in Britain.

Add to this mass immigration and crime that has made a proper life truly impossible in a great part of the country (but of course, you can't talk about it - so officially, people are escaping "negativity" lol).

Add also the traditional French attitude for escaping, irresponsibility and seeking hedonism and you have the receipe for mass emigration to Thailand.

Heck, even the State minister Mitterrand was caught a few years ago for boy sex in Pattaya lol

French writer Michel Houellebecq became a millionaire over 10 years ago already by describing this mess in his books.

“Do you really want to own a Ferrari convertible? A week-end home in Deauville, that will anyway be burglarized? To work ninety hours per week until the age of sixty? To pay half of your salary in taxes in order to finance military operations in Kosovo or the perennial plans for “rescuing the projects”? No exit possible, except escape, exile, get out of this mess as quickly as possible.”

“Until the end, I will remain a child of Europe, of worry and of shame; I don’t have any hopeful message to deliver. For the Western world, I don’t feel hate, at the most an utter contempt. I only know that, as much as we are, we stink of egoism, masochism and death. We have created a system in which it has become simply impossible to live; and furthermore, we keep exporting it.”

– Michel Houellebecq (“Extension of the Field of Struggle”), author of a trilogy on the misery of human, social and sexual relationships of modern Westerners.

I lived on Koh Tao for a few months last year, I complained about the French, then moved to Koh Chang for awhile....... after being around the Russians there, I vowed to myself, "I will never again complain about the French!" .......

I wonder if there is a French forum where they are moaning about you all here? 555

I think this is exaggerated. We live on Koh Phangan and we have many friends who are foreigners just like us, and many of them have businesses on the island. Only 10% of them are french. Nationality who are mostly represented are clearly British, or at least people from native English speaking countries. Just look at the international school you will see what nationalities are represented.

Nah. The French do not really care what others think about them. smile.png

A philosophy that I agree with by the way. thumbsup.gif

At least it's seduisant :P I don't care where people come from as long as they behave. I can find tons of loud & drunk people from most European (and some non-European) countries in the "party district" of SW KPG while most people away from the party district behave decently regardless of where they come from.

i thought it was tel aviv over there lol

I have two french neighbours, who are not around at the moment, but I am pretty certain they have mentioned that there is a local french forum... perhaps do a Google search, au Francais or is that Francois? wink.png

Yes, quiet a number of French expats here... never had a problem with any that I meet thumbsup.gif

For my information, what's so annoying about my fellow countrymen?

They like to talk loudly in the restaurant while having a 3 hours long dinner? Their english is very bad?

At least there are more good restaurant and bakeries opening on the island. Better than russian restaurants or german bakeries biggrin.png

Well for me that's a good thing to know. Although we are a British family we have been living in France for 5 years and I really will need help to keep my 8yo fluent!( I have passable French she has excellent French ) We are on the way to Samui this summer, all things being equal, so are escaping Europe by degrees, but really want to keep up the language she has already learned. Very happy to be moving to a multi-cultural environment :)

Nothing annoying, it's just awful food.

^^ so don't eat at those establishments. I'm sure there are plenty of alternatives for you to moan about.... or even enjoy.

huh... read my post again, I was just saying that a french invasion on the island had a positive side, even for french haters

I notice when the summers come in people's native countries people tend to go home and the other side of the world.

Like now it is Aussie season the Brits going back for the summer

Just what I have noticed

As far as the French go. Koh phangan can have them

I think you have misconstrued the OP.

I like French people and had a good time there. The question pertains to why they are drawn to Koh Phagnan in large numbers as opposed to the other islands.

Additionally, we are not talking large amounts of men looking for a "good time". There is a healthy mix of both men, women, and children.

Seems like a good place to settle for an expat as there is a strong community of decent people there (not just the typical types who come here to drink themselves to death).

Maybe there is a secret import of red wine and croissants
