At that time I was stationed in Malta. The ' Gut' was more famous then than Thailand, in those days,and wow what a time we had. In fact Thailand was hardly heard of by us British forces. It was 'The Gut' in Malta, 'Heroes Square' in Limasoll in Cyprus, and ' Boogie Street' in Singers.Or of course the great big girlie bar called ' Hong Kong'

I haven't seen those hairstyles too often (not the big, puffy ones at least), but I have seen alot of girls that look very, very similar to the ones in those pictures.

In some cases, the only difference seems to be the clothes, being a little (a lot ?) sexier these days.

I was merely trying to get confirmation or denial of this fact, or comments by those who've been there that time.

the guy who told me this is French, and he purposefully doesn't participate in such English language Forums as this one but only in those in his own language, otherwise I'd request him to write it himself here.

I mean, it is not a secret that this whole so called "go-go bar culture" has been introduced to Thailand and established by G.Is and ex-G.Is who has settled down here, right ? all these uuh and aah and reminiscents about "old good times" when this industry just started, nostalgia for gals and palces... what was that ? whatever, but huge part is based on sexual advantures (perhaps the TV slang word "sexpat" has originated since then?).

and this industry nowdays in its full swing in Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok - would it be at all, if not started from those "nice cute" bars in Korat and other places, where G.Is were stationed ? and the bigger or biggest part of image Thai people have nowdays about farangs?

reports of rapes in Japan, Phillipines, Korea and many other places - well, G.Is uphold their reputation even in present time.

may be Brits or other soldiers are not better than G.Is, I think most probably. but we are talking about Thailand, and I doubt Brits of Canadians or others were ever stationed in Korat or Isaan (that was an american war in Vietnam after all) or anywhere else here in LOS. were they ?

Brits were in Hong Kong (and much longer at that) and had similar reputaion.

Thailand was practically occupied, although not officially. first by Japs, and then by US. Japan was literally ocupied and some my friend told me till now it doesn't have techical indepenence. Phillipines were "carpet-bombed" after WWII. and Thailand, first because it officially being on the side of Japan during WWII, has been "punished" in certain way; and then later during Communist menace in Indochina and real troubles with them in Thailand or fear of uprisings, Thai military allowed US military presence, giving many bases to them. of course a lot of funds as well as weapons also played its role.

so, while Thai government was trying to prove themselves "good", normal people, especially in those rural areas as Isaan (which remains mainly such even now) had no choise but tolerate whatever the results of such politics. doesn't mean they were happy about it, despite some who has made good money out of it - either government or those who were clever enough to "follow the trend" in go-go bar industry.

see some old Thai movies with episodes where some students chants slogans like "americans go away" and not only old. yes, I recall one called I think "7-2" or something like that.

Yes, tales such as you refer to are revolting and I see little purpose in going there. There are present day horror stories of which there is endless variety and their number is equally uncountable. Dig up the same in the past and you can fill your entire waking life with tales of the worst that man has to offer. Question: why would you want to do that?

Now, that to me has much greater value and it is this which I prefer to fill my life with.
