Peering, front centre, with Phuket Immigration Police.

PHUKET: -- Immigration police this morning arrested 45-year-old British man, Stephen Peering, on charges of exceeding his permit to stay by two years, and possession of marijuana.

Pol Capt Angkarn Yasanop told The Phuket News the police received information that a British man was living illegally in Kok Chang Mansion in Tai Na Rd, Karon.

“When we arrived there we found him walking around the mansion so we asked him for his passport. He said it was in his room. But when we got to his room he acted nervously, and told us that he had lost his passport.

“We smelled something like marijuana so we asked him to allow us to search his room and found a bag of marijuana inside a drawer. But it was a tiny bag.” They also found his passport, which had long expired.

Checks showed that Peering arrived in Thailand from Myanmar via the Mae Sai Immigration Checkpoint in Chiang Rai on February 21, 2011. He was granted a two-week tourist visa, which expired on March 7, 2011.

Since then he had not left the country. He was sent to Karon Police Station to be charged.

What is 'living illegally' ? Was he a squatter ?

From my point of view he did not anything wrong, just a guy who does not live conform some manmade rules.

It seems he lived in a house that was not occupied by someone else.

He stayed on a piece on earth that should be free to use for all of us.

He loved herbes that were made by God, with the reason to use them to free our minds.

This is not a criminal.

I am sure your opinion is very consolling for him. Now all you have to do is convince the Thai authorities he has violated none of their Immigration and drug laws.

No. That's an alcohol thing. But looking at his face I think he is/was an alcoholic.

Guess they just deport him with a red stamp in his passport ?

The three guys behind him are too close to each other.

Its back to Blighty, matey. Paradise jaunt over.

Another in a long line of men who have let go the reins of their life in Thailand. Usually it's as result of poontang, but in this case seemingly a few spliffs were involved.

Nothing to see here, move along now....

I thought overstay was just a 20,000b max fine.

That's only if you get to the airport with ticket out and valid travel document eg passport.

Edit to add, the court could well levy an overstay fine less than 20,000, but he will probably be held at the Immigration detention Centre until he has a new passport or emergency travel document and a ticket back to the UK.

Then there is the marijuana problem.

that was true but i think now that also does not work any more you will get arrested by immigration and in this case risk a pretty long time behind bars and a fine that is royal

ok was typing while you were editing

I was almost agreeing with you until you brought up that 'God' guy from the fairytale stories.

Ohh well done chaps..... cleaning Phuket up and focus on high risk individuals and other activities.

My god is that all the fab three in the photo have to do ??

I fel sorry for this guy.. some people in life do it tough.. yes he broke laws no argument but who knows what this guy has been through or had dished up to him in life...

I just wish the zeal and endeavour used to get their man could be replicated even to a tiny degree by other members of the regulatory bodies that are supposed to render law and order such that those responsible for tourist muggings, jet ski scams, deadly mini bus drivers, crooked cops and politicians could be equally paraded in front of the camera's....

This is not news this is just some poor guy who was down on his luck.... I hope their are silver linings for you buddy.. stay positive and recognise that sometimes life's little unexpected downs can quite often turn for the best

He has a very nasty future at the Immigration holding cell where you can be stuck for years he will be prosecuted first and most likely jailed for the overstay and then will have to deal with Immigration as they will collect him upon his release. And that is without the drug charge.

Well, look at most of you pointing the finger and throwing stones in glass houses. We don't know why he overstayed yet and straight away most of you portraying the perfect alien! Shame on you and your bullying of a man you don't even know. Let's find out the whole story if we can before for he is succumbed to your wrath of comments.....Just saying....:-)

His butler was stupid to let the police in, knowing his boss inhales and have nt been near any border or immigration office past 2 years.
