I would like to visit Cambodia for a week or so. What is the best way to get there from Pattaya. I am closer to Rayong, but presume Pattaya will be more likley to have a bus service.

I could drive there, but don't fancy it, as its the first time I will have been there.

I've been considering a trip to Angkor Wat myself. Haven't actually made any solid plans yet though.

From what I've seen and heard, I will probably use one of the travel services in Pattaya to book a trip. Some of them offer what appears to be good deals, and do the paperwork/visa stuff for you at the border.

I don't think I would try driving there (not yet, maybe in 10-20 years :o )

Bus service ? You are thinking of a public bus service (as opposed to a tour-group bus) ?

It's possible I suppose. I'll have a look to see if I can find anything out if no one else already knows.

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think you can drive to Cambodia. You will have to leave your vehicle at the border.

I drove to Aryanpathet and then had Cambodian mini bus drive me and friends to Siem Reap. I don't recommend it as the road is absolutely appalling and it takes many many hours of bone crunching dusty hel_l, with bridges collapsing all over the place, manaiacal drivers, no toilets and goodness knows what else. So even if you could take your car in, it would never be the same again.

I have never been to Pnom Penh , but |I understand there is a good bar scene there. Others can advise.

I really recommend Ankor Wat . It is the most incredible place, and to do it justice you will need at least 3- 4 days. Its truly one of the wonders of the world, and you should go soon as I doubt you willl be able to see it and walk around it in its present state much longer, beacuse the influx of tourists is slowy destroying everything.

The poverty in Cambodia is extremely depressing. Talk about corrupt governments. Sigh. :o

I think flying is the only practicable way, unless you're seriously short of cash, young and fit :D

You can fly from BKK to Phnom Penh (PNH) with Air Asia from 799 baht each way (Plus Taxes etc)

Check out this link for more details Air Asia

Thanks for the help folks.

I will either use air asia or try a tour company in Pattaya. If anyone knows a good one let me know.

Cheers.

I think i did that already :o

So you did. Sorry for repeating myself.

I tried the number you gave. They seemed a bit steep at 12,000 bath for two days and three nights, travelling there by road.

Thanks anyway.

An alternative route is to go to Ban Hat Lek, from the Cam side of the border you can either take a ferry to Sihanoukville (it leaves in the morning) or a minibus (also early morning) to Phnom Penh. Specially the land route would be rather adventurous, not for the faint-hearted.

That should cost around $30 each way.

Best figure out where you really want to be in Cambodia and work from there.

If you want to go to Angkor then the best way not to waste a ton of time is to fly. Siem Reap is a little more expensive to reach via plane but going overland can be truly exhausting. I did it in November ... great trip but lost a whole day at Angkor due to road conditions going the shortest way there (poipet to Siem Reap)

Personally I'd fly into Phnom Penh ... look around for a day or 2 .... then take the boat up river and across the lake ... (you may end up on top of the boat ... dress for sun and bring water and a nosh!) It is a longish trip but you get to see village life along the river .... Nice!

On the way back book a decent bus down to Phnom Penh and you'll catch some more interesting views .....

The roads to the borders are still mostly dirt ... the bridges across rivers/streams etc are in chronic disrepair ... the overland trip in I took had a bridge out 2 hours before Siem Reap ... that took another 2 hours to wait until they could get pickups (not songteaw) out to cart everyone and their baggage (backpacks etc) in to Siem Reap .... yes 16 people with gear per standard pickup truck .... no fun!

Flying into Siam Reap has to be the best option. I recall getting prices from a whole load of travel agents in Pattaya. They all seemed rather expensive.l In the end me and a friend took a cab to Don Muang and somewhat counter intuitively the prices at the airport beat all the Pattaya quotes and were much more in line with web quotes we saw. I would recomend you identify a hotel before you go. Siam Reap town is not that big. The nightlife can be entertaining.

Probably a bit late for you but may help other people. Yes you can drive/ride a motorbike here, just make sure your paperwork is in order. Which paperwork I don't know but it'll be available at the embassy. They drive on the right here, so it can be a bit confusing at first. It took me about 6 months before I stopped driving on the wrongside accidently, now I just do it on purpose like everyone else.

Border crossings take time. I think the most economical way would be to fly in the border cross out through Poipet. Doing the Koh Kong crossing takes 8Hrs from the border or 9hrs from Trat to get to PP.
