I talked with a golf player about the absolute minimum price for a round of golf in Thailand. We came up with a price that he felt was quite cheap, but is expensive in my world.

In my little country in north-west Europe we have golf courses that are run similar to amateur sport clubs; all instructors and officials are volunteers that work for free and all prices and fees are kept at a minimum. There is definitely no compulsory lady carrying the golf clubs.

Do they have similar "amateur" golf courses in Thailand ?

Have a few 9 hole tracks around, down my neck of the woods near Pattaya there is a Thai Navy Course in Sattahip, play as many holes as you want for 300 baht. No caddies there. You have to hire a trolley - 20baht. Drinks cheap and there is a 'restaurant/clubhouse' that serve thai dishes for 40 baht.

The course is not 5 star, but you still get your golf fix.

On the weekends you often have packs of Thai Navy on the course - can be a long round, they are all gambling away. I go with my Thai neighbour and join in with the wagering - can be fun.

Midweek is a different story, often dead quiet, that is when you see more farangs down there.

Certainly a track that after a while everyone knows each other and once you are in you always get a friendly hello.

Downside - when it is hot it is boiling, close to the beach but hot as... when it rains it has crap drainage and turns into a mud heap.

oh, they have a range there too, you can hit off grass.. from memory is 10baht a tray? 20baht maximum, dirt cheap anyway.

Thank you all three. This is exactly the sort of answers I hoped for.

I can use the Ta Khli course (Nakhon Sawan) when free and the Chonburi course when working.

Century Chonburi is closed for refurbishment until October (most likely will reopen at a higher rate). Don't think it was possible to get away without a caddy there. Rayong Country Club is now 300 Baht greenfee and last year at least you did not have to take a caddy.
