Thai Spring to target Thaksin online
The Nation

Members of the white-mask group rally outside Government House yesterday demanding that the prime minister sack Deputy PM Plodprasop Suraswadi over the insults he levelled at protestors on previous occasions.

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Spring group is set to launch an anti-government Web page called Thai Spring Forum as a venue to hold regular online meetings, before calling on supporters to stage rallies when the time is right.

The group, led by Vasit Dejkunchorn, a retired police general, and former senator Kaewsan Atibodhi, has been protesting since last month against comments made by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in a speech in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

Kaewsan said he would today reveal details of the group's "Ulan Bator letter", endorsed by 26,000 supporters. The letter will be distributed to democratic countries across the globe, he said.

The group will launch the Thai Spring Forum Web page next Friday, with eventual plans to hold online meetings every Friday and Sunday. During the initial stage, meetings will be held every other Friday and Sunday from 6-7pm.

The Web page would give group members a forum to express their opinions, which will then be recorded and uploaded on YouTube. Attendance at the weekly meetings would be assessed according to the number of people viewing the Web page.

Kaewsan said he and Vasit would invite guest speakers and pick topics for discussion. A rally would later be scheduled, which members will be able to view online.

The former senator said the Yingluck government's actions had inspired him to create Thai Spring, adding that apart from abusing the state's power to further its own interests, the government had tried to whitewash Yingluck's brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, and corrupt politicians by amending the charter.

'Misuse of power'

"People do not elect the government to whitewash the PM's brother or use the legislative process to destroy the judiciary. We know that people are against these attempts but they have no stage to express their disapproval," he said.

"We can protest through civil disobedience without resorting to force or violence or seize state property. The charter guarantees [the right to] peaceful protest," Kaewsan said.

"We have two worlds [the real and cyber worlds]. We can express our opinions on social networks, since [on such forums] there is no need to have a leader or followers; there are only participants. We have white-mask friends who communicate online and one day we can set up appointments to meet somewhere," he said.

He likened the birth of the Thai Spring Forum to Sondhi Limthongkul's staging of anti-Thaksin rallies at Lumpini Park.

"The impact of our group will depend on the government's actions. We want to create this cyber-campaign first just to be an 'electric charge' and wait for 'the magnet' to attract more people," Kaewsan said.

In a separate development, some 300 members of the white-mask group rallied in front of Government House yesterday to demand that the prime minister sack Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi immediately.

Meanwhile, a group of about 120 red shirts yesterday rallied in front of Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda's residence calling on him to intervene and to tell the nine Constitutional Court judges to resign.

Is there any point?

Pheu Thai seem to be doing an excellent job in self destructing all by themselves right now.

They are gust adding more fuel to the fire.

  • Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament. PTP is doing the same with democracy. I thought the Guy Fawkes connection was actually quite clever!

Nothing wrong with giving them a helping hand though.

Telling the general public where the website is going to be, when the meetings are and the such, I would imagine that this will be an enormous detterent to people logging in.

The authorities will be very busy logging IP addresses.

"Thai spring." They liken themselves to Arab spring without a clue on the meaning. Overthrow and "removal" of 30 year dictators by armed revolution. How long will it take for this Thai spring to die out? If it ever resulted in a serious threat to overthrow the government, the Thai military would suppress that right away.

So they want to be failures like Guy Fawkes? That's considered clever?

Ian's explanation was that the mask represents not how they see themselves, but how they see their enemy. Edited by rixalex

Why the Guy Fawkes masks? I don't get it?

Is there a bonfire and fireworks show after?

Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up the house of Lords and the king in an attempt to disrupt the then corrupt government, his plot failed. Although we celebrate 5th November (Guy Fawkes night) in memory of the survival of the King many considered Guy Fawkes to be a hero for his attempts to remove what was by all accounts a terrible government.

Doesn't that mean that by wearing the masks their enemy will see them as the failed Guy Fawkes?

They look like they are copying the Anonymous Hacker group, who have organized protest events over the years using websites and social media. They have been featured on a number of television news interest stories recently. They are noted for using Guy Fawkes of masks to protect their identity.

They are well known for their protests against the Church of Scientology and organizing a world wide protest via the internet. http://news.cnet.com/8301-10789_3-9857666-57.html

When attending a protest they suggest:

Face Coverings A Guy Fawkes mask is the traditional Anon face covering, and it's a good one. Before buying a mask to protest in, though, check your local ordinance and consult your local cell—in some locations masks are not permitted. If you don’t have a mask, can’t wear one because of local laws or don’t want to wear one, any face covering will do: theatrical masks, surgical or dust mask, scarves or bandannas, face paint and veils are good alternatives.

To find a Guy Fawkes mask, ask your local cell or check out online vendors:

Par for course to borrow an idea or concept from elsewhere ... certainly not original. Original would have been to use traditional Thai masks.

Is it really important whether the Thai folks now wearing this mask represent

a cause which is fully aligned to the guy fawkes activity. No!

Is it really important that the Thai folks now using this mask deeply understand

the guy fawkes matter? Not really.

Somehow it's become a (non confused) symbol of rebellion and protest against

the paymaster and the government. There's the real point.

The RTA swear allegiance to King and Thailand, not the government of the day.

In the next week or so, the PM is going to have to stand up and admit huge losses on the rice scam. The interesting part will be what she intends to do about it. Admitting that it was a huge mistake should automatically include her resignation, saying that they intend to continue to throw away hundreds of billions of baht may have a similar result by other means.

Try reading some history before you post inaccurate nonsense.

Interesting thought Mick. I guess Moody's comments and downgrading may force a response. Otherwise she would've bumbled along hoping this would go away like the illegal passport issuing and other iritants.

Either the figures and response will be complete nonsense; or their will be some attempts to shift the blame to the financial markets and global economy; or just outright lies. Admitting the real figures could be very dangerous, especially if a large chunk, say around THB 47 billion can't be accounted for.

In most countries, a disaster like this would force the PM to resign, the government's credibility collapse and a general election to ensue. Here, probably some "creative" figure work, fudged mumbo jumbo words, and then back to business as normal. If by some strange phenomenon she did resign, big sister would step in as PM and call her back inot cabinet, probably as FM - more trips and shopping.

I think, but not 100% sure that they have chosen Guy Fawks as their avatar because of his anti-establishment stance, which they seem to be emulating.

I tend to agree with him although he is overdoing the years of dictatorship. 3 years or 30 years makes no difference. It may develop into a serious threat but I think not as serious a threat against the government as the one they are creating themselves with all the corruption and disregard of their duties to the Thai citizens in favor of spending their time on white washing Thaksin.

66,000,000 Thais and they use them to line their pockets.

There is only 1 Thai they are trying to help and that is by changing laws so all his illegal activities will become legal.

The saying goes " The only person to enter parliament with honourable intentions was Guy Fawkes", it would appear that apart from giving the world parliament, we (UK) actually managed to provide the antidote as well.............the question of fireworks will depend on how effective the antidote is.
