Chairman of ICANN and creator of internet visits Prime Minister Yingluck

BANGKOK, 10th May 2013 (NNT) - Dr. Steve Crocker, Chairman of the Board of The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and one of the creators of the internet, paid a visit to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Parliament house on the 7th June, 2013.

According to Government Spokesperson Teerat Ratanasevi, , Dr. Crocker complimented Thailand as one of the top ranking countries for prioritizing internet security. He congratulated Thailand on its 25th year anniversary of the Thai internet and the registering of the “.th” domain. He also praised the government’s “tablet PC for education”, adding that he would work closely with the Thai government to maintain internet security standards.

ICANN has also upgraded its IP address from IPv4 to IPv6 to accommodate future expansion in internet network systems. Mr. Teerat stated that Thailand places great importance on the internet, especially in publicizing information on health, education, and security.

The government also has a policy to provide more available access to support internet user demand in all sectors. It also looks forward to working together more closely with ICANN now that the latter has set up its’ new office in Singapore to serve as the central base in Asia

No negatives then? Such as the massive increase in internet censorship, lack of freedom of speech and severe prosecution of people for minor offenses, often without proper due process and legal representation?

Pathetic, trumpet-blowing, pat-on-the back, void of any proper journalism article.

Wonder if yingluck asked how he got it all in such a small box.

Yingluck maybe asked him if he could switch of the internet. "They say bad things about me on internet"

He congratulated Thailand for being one of the top countries for prioritising Internet security and Yingluck replied they were about to achieve absolute security as her government is on the point of shutting it down to stop all the bad protesters using it to complain and make defamatory statements.

And here I thought the thread was going to be about Al Gore.

What a load of BS, nothing about internet censorship, ICT, poor internet connections, prosecution of people for posting stuff on the internet that might upset a few people, etc, etc

I would have thought inviting the founder of SKYPE would have been a better option, given that the country is run by a fugitve calling in on SKYPE to issue his commands.

Tim Berners-Lee is the creator of the internet

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee had more to do with 'inventing' the World Wide Web/HTTP, while Dr. Crocker, arguably, helped to create ARPANET, which was the progenitor of the Internet.

As such, the headline seems OK to me, even though it might be a bit pretentious.

+1, Al Gore invented the internet in his garage work shop :)

No, Berners-Lee created the WWW, which is based on the internet... that the US Dept of Defense's DARPA created and set free into the wild... and WHO says taxpayer-funded R&D is a waste of money?

From Wikipedia:

"The history of the Internet began with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. The public was first introduced to the concepts that would lead to the Internet when a message was sent over the ARPANet from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), after the second piece of network equipment was installed atStanford Research Institute (SRI). Packet switched networks such as ARPANET, Mark I at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet, were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s using a variety of protocols. The ARPANET in particular led to the development of protocols for internetworking, in which multiple separate networks could be joined together into a network of networks.

In 1982, the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) was standardized, and consequently, the concept of a world-wide network of interconnected TCP/IP networks, called the Internet, was introduced. Access to the ARPANET was expanded in 1981 when theNational Science Foundation (NSF) developed the Computer Science Network (CSNET) and again in 1986 when NSFNET provided access to supercomputer sites in the United States from research and education organizations. Commercial Internet service providers(ISPs) began to emerge in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The ARPANET was decommissioned in 1990. The Internet was commercialized in 1995 when NSFNET was decommissioned, removing the last restrictions on the use of the Internet to carry commercial traffic."

... and then the CIA pwned it whistling.gif

Internet is just a computer network and came after computer networks were invented. The fact it's worldwide has more to do with global co-operation and defence funding than it does technology advancements.

I propose a network which spans the solar system; the 'HarryNet' shall be my invention when it happens.

Just a network, easy to say, eh? These guys, however, made it happen. When the Harrynet goes live, don't take a picture, please!

After all her trials and tribulations this past week it must be a nice change for Yingluck to have a meeting with a happy ending.

There is no creator of internet, it became as it is following a succession of innovation of various importance.

Garbage.

It reminded me of what a man would tell a women on a date when he was hoping that it would have a happy ending.

Clearly a s chit chat feel happy meeting

Clearly, since they've put their Central Base offices for Asia in Singapore and not Bangkok.. too bad, I can see the headlines now... "Thailand, internet hub of Asia."

Tim Berners-Lee is the creator of the internet

No he isn't.

The internet (the connections between networks of computers using TCP/IP) predates that.

Sorry - not the first person to point that out obviously...

If you're going to pick one person as the inventor of the internet I, personally, would say Vinton Cerf, but Crocker is definitely up there...

Would you have gone after Alexander Graham Bell for someone making an obscene or threatening phone call?

Good point of view skype being used for obscene and threatening phone calls from Dubai.

I like it.

But your rite they have nothing to do with the inventor of Skype.

You can thank the American taxpayer, they made it happen.

Yingluck maybe asked him if he could switch of the internet. "They say bad things about me on internet"

She better ask him to delete these movies
