I remember it (the Sinclair). Amazing the difference in flexibility and price these days - incredible power, gigs of RAM, terras of storage, high definition colour display, hi fidelity sound, USB, etc, etc; all for a fraction of the price of old, in relative terms - who'd have imagined? It's probably akin to comparing the velocipede with an A380.

I remember my first love.... a 186 with a 5 meg hard drive and a 5.25 inch floppy. A mono (Hercules??) graphics card.

To think that I thought it was the bee's knees.

I graduated thru 286 and 386, CGA then VGA.

Those were the days.

My first REAL PC was an 8086 20 mg HDD

Upgraded to 8286 40 mg HDD, WOW......etc till my present 2 y/o 1.66, 165 2 core duo.

Started with 2 megs ram, now 2 Gigs.

Quite happy at the time.

Now I want more of everything........ PMPL.

20 meg on an 8086 - huge! Must have cost a LARGE fortune (most of them were single or dual floppy drives. Later, 8 or 10 meg HDDs became commonplace with the 8088s). I held off after the Sega - my first real 'puter was a 286 in '89. Cost about $4,000 with 1 meg of RAM (standard was 640k, and the extra 300 odd meg were quite a few hundred $, from recollection). VGA with a 20 meg parkable HDD. Never had a blue screen of death (or any other colour, for that matter) with good old DOS. Incidentally, I've never had a need to do a lot of printing at home, and my old $800 (in '89) dot matrix Epson LQ-500 is still in service today, celebrating its 21st birthday.

CB you've mastered the touch pad? You've got to be the only person I know of who hasn't plugged in a rodent and blissfully ignored his pad.

I am now so used to the touch pad I much prefer it to a mouse. I don't use a mouse except when I am forced to use the antiquated desktop machines at college.

555 Limpy. Many thanks for your invaluable contribution to the current discussion... :)

Talking of printers.

My Spectrum had a roll of siver backed thermal printing paper.

I thought it was great....... at the time.

Looking back, it was terrible, but my family had their mail printed with it......hehe.

TLW: Appaling.

I am playing nice and not tempting fate by pointing out the appalling spelling error above :)

Phhhhhuuuuuuutttttttttttttttttttt.

At the time I posted, spelling is outta da door....... hehe :)

TLW: Burrrrrp

A friend of mine used to quote "Webster's Law" Whereby it is an almost certainty that the person who points out a grammatical or spelling error will inadvertently misspell a word.

My retort was that Webster wrote for Americans and was one of the first lexicographers of the time to try to simplify the spelling of the English language. He is responsible for changing the spelling of colour, labour etc.

Just wrenching TLW back to its rightful owner, packing it in with my other bits and pieces, and whisking it away from the dreary Melbourne winter and off to the warmth of the Pearl of the Andaman.

Looks like no Loy Krathong in Chalong for me this year.

Had last 4 there.

Nutha 2 days (22nd May) and I am gunna marry my gal.

Expenses are unending.

Last year was my first Loy Krathong for many, many years - I've been in the habit of returning to Oz at the start of November, when the Melbourne weather is becoming pleasant. What a difference - it was always quite an event, but now it's huge (and very enjoyable). I'll be there for it again this year. I'll send up one of those lanterns for you. Eventually the flame will flicker out and the lantern will come crashing back to earth. Remind you of anything? :D

Best wishes for the wedding. :)

Despite that I have done more Songhkrans than I care to remember and enjoy them immensely I still like Loy Krathong. It is now much more boisterous than in the past when I and the lady of the moment would go to the river, lake, pond, beer spillage and put a float down then retire to my room where I would float her boat.

Limpy, it seems that Loy Krathong in Pong is nothing like Loy Krathong in Patong. (There's potential for a poem there somewhere, between knitting sessions.)

Gawd, I've stuffed up. Returning to Oz on 15 November and I've just discovered that Loy Krathong is 21 November. Spitting chips! :)
