By Adib Povera

ALOR STAR: -- A single mother from Thailand was sentenced to death by the High Court today for trafficking in 18,172gm of cannabis two years ago.

Thitima Khongnun, 30, was found guilty by Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab of committing the offence near the Jitra Toll Plaza in Jitra near here at 9.10pm on Oct 20, 2011.

Thitima, a mother of two children, was detained by an enforcement team from the Customs Department when she was on board a bus heading to Kuala Lumpur from Changlun near here.

Mohd Zaki in his judgment said the court found that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

Who will take care the kids???

I hope she figured that one out before she was so stupid to do this.. When you gamble you know the risks.

Its never nice if it happens and surely I never hope it will happen. but when a country has set the rules people have to obey them and the law has to be enforced.. otherwise it starts to look like Thailand

It appears excessive but there are clear signs along the border detailing the penalties for drug trafficking. You'd have to be plain stupid to traffic drugs in South East Asia... oh yeah, she's Thai and there was money involved. Case closed.

SE asia, you know the rules, they don't laugh with it as in EU countries

if you can't stand the death penalty, don't start to be a dealer in the first place

lots of honest jobs to do

even prostitution would only be selling her body for money, more honorable than selling illegal drugs for profit

Prostitution is more honorable than selling WEED??? I think you've been in Thailand too long!

And if you stay in Thailand a while longer, you might realize that many women find that it is an honorable way to provide for a better future for their children.

And that the honorable fathers of these children are nowhere to be found...

it's not 18 grams she tried to smuggle but 18.

That's 18 KG, not 18 grams.

continental Europeans use a "dot" instead of a "comma" as dividers.

Its a big shame for the children, but the law is the law. She broke it and knew exactly what she was doing, and its sad but just because she has kids will not alter there decision. It also seems a bit much for that !!

To be precise, thousands are separated by a full stop, not a comma.

that's kinda crazy, not even crack or heroine... just cannabis, something grown natural.

Way too harsh.

Cannabis is used as a medicine against cancer. The real cancer in Asia are the middle-aged laws. Perhaps the judges should try some smoke.

Cannabis laws are completely f#%}<d IMHO.

You don't make the laws so your opinion isn't material. Malaysia does not make any secret of its strict laws on drugs.

How many countries have legalized cannabis?

And what precisely is morally wrong with selling cannabis, a drug which is proven to be less harmful than alcohol? Do tell us where your wisdom comes from.

What's wrong - it's against the law. How's that for wisdom. Break the law, get caught and convicted and you will be punished.

You may think this drug is less harmful than alcohol, as many of its illegal users claim. I have seen numerous reports that say the opposite and some to support it. But, whilst that's an interesting debate, it doesn't change the fact that cannabis is illegal in the majority of countries.

Do you think laws can be ignored based on every individuals' notion of what is morally acceptable or not?

But she wasn't in Holland. She was in a a country where it's well known that if you get caught dealing in drugs you can be executed.

Neither is honourable - so neither can be more or less honourable than the other.

Law is law, you don't like it then don't do it there. Not only Malaysia, try doing it in Singapore and you get the same punishment.

Before going to any country, learn about what can and can't do in the first place. No mater what religion or races you are, if you break the law you face the music.

Are you sure ? I think you are in need of a morality check. Basicaly, you are saying that there would be more honour in your eyes should your, wife /girlfriend /daughter/sister sell their body than there would be with them selling "weed" (Cannabis). You are indeed a very strange man.
