TAT to use 'Dream Tourism' initiative to appeal to domestic tourists

Thais' dreams of traveling the ways they want to.

In coaches and mini buses that are not driven by Red-Bull addled drivers with a tendency to crash killing passengers and run away.

.....with its "Fall in Love with Thailand" campaign, to achieve year-round tourism activity.

That will be an interesting idea considering Thai company's paid vacation for employees, it will be New Year, Songkran and a few religious days like lent maybe Ramadan in the South.

The tourism authority also aims to place greater importance on the tourism activities of the

underprivileged and the handicapped.

Nice idea, never happen no motivation to invest in accessibility or even study the problem.

In the meantime, the TAT has laid down a strategy to pull in more tourists from the middle and lower segments of growing markets that include China, Russia and India.

So the high end TAT project has failed - now aim low?

Be careful what you wish for TAT, if you get lower end travellers from India and Russia you are in for a culture shock. cheesy.gif

Don't say you were not warned.

As an able-bodied person, I struggle to walk down the footpaths in Thailand's tourist areas. I don't know how someone with a physical disability could possibly cope. Perhaps putting money into getting basic infrastructure right woud be better spent than a PR campaign.

How many hotels are even wheelchair accessible? Yet they plan to campaign to physically challenged people? They don't even know the politically correct terminology.

Phuket: TAT reveals ‘tourism strategy’ for 2014

Tourist arrivals in Phuket are expected to increase.

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has set a target for next year of 28.1 million international arrivals, it was announced yesterday.

The international tourists will bring in B1.326 trillion, the TAT estimates, a rise of 13 per cent on predictions for this year.

For the domestic market, the TAT has set a target of 136.8 million trips, which it says will push another B700 billion – an increase of 9 per cent – into the economy.

The announcement, made yesterday, confirms the magical target figure for total tourism revenue in 2014 – already widely bandied about – of just over B2 trillion.

The figures were revealed as part of the TAT’s revelation of its action plan for 2014. All the big wheels on the government were at the presentation at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok: Somsak Pureesrisak, Minister of Tourism and Sports; TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni and the six TAT Deputy Governors.

Mr Suraphon said that “Thainess” and “balance” will be the key words driving strategies in the future. This will apply to target customer segments, source markets, earnings and sustainability. In his speech he identified key points of the TAT plan:

* To focus on the core theme of “Higher Revenue through Thainess.” The TAT “will attract tourists with the Charm of Thainess, which include Thai Experience, Thai Way of Life, and Thai Culture”.

* To emphasise “Thainess” – Thainess to the World, Thainess Through Celebrities, Thainess Connected.

* To raise awareness of Thailand as a “Quality Destination” with a broad diversity of experiences that contribute to visitors’ “happiness”.

* To balance source markets and refocus customer segments to high-end markets.

* To reduce visitor congestion in the popular destinations by better balance in distribution of visitors nationwide and by boosting connectivity with other Asean countries.

* To “balance” the tourism season by promoting travel in the low season and promoting Green Tourism in order to lower the environmental impact of high visitor arrivals.

* To use new technology “to develop the TAT’s social customer relationship as a marketing tool to boost opportunities for visitors to network and share the experience of Thainess”.

* To use travel and tourism “as a means of creating awareness of love for Thailand”.

Thailand received just over 22 million international tourists in 2012. The figure for this year is predicted at 24.5 million.

Taking these one by one:

  • "For the domestic market, the TAT has set a target of 136.8 million trips, which it says will push another B700 billion – an increase of 9 per cent – into the economy" Balderdash and poppycock. The domestic money is already in circulation in Thailand so domestic tourism contributes zero additional revenue into the economy. It is a conflict of interest for a tourism ministry to promote domestic tourism which is why you only see "chosen" destinations receiving promotion expenditures.
  • Promoting Thainess is an odd concept. Promoting destination and cultural attractions is what motivates leisure travel purchases. Is Thainess the way of stringing electrical cables, not earthing circuits, getting hacked to death by a cabbie with a machete, balcony diving, bribery for everything, pixellating cigs and booze on TV while girls flash their beavers on sidewalk stools, ten against one conflict resolution, and the list goes on and on and on....
  • That's it, connection or site too slow to continue.

To use new technology “to develop the TAT’s social customer relationship as a marketing tool to boost opportunities for visitors to network and share the experience of Thainess”.

To use new technology “to develop the TAT’s social customer relationship as a marketing tool to boost opportunities for visitors to network and share the experience of Thainess”.

So will Pattaya and Phuket now make Russian the official second language?

Well, someone has to replace the low end Brit, Seppo and Aussie tourists who are outpriced and need to go to Cambo now to sustain their tropical lifestyle. thumbsup.gif

Very true. I wonder what your average husband and wife, sitting around the kitchen table in the rain in the winter, perceive as "Thainess".

He is probably grinning from ear to ear, and she is probably scowling.

One can only assume that the recent conference to decide how to boost high-end tourists to 40% finally saw sense, and that the TAT has done a U-turn, and will in future try to boost those parts of the market which actually work, rather than continuing to live in Amply-Rich Elite-HiSo La-La Land ?

In which case good for them, it's a far better plan, they must have been reading Thai-Visa ! thumbsup.gif

Maybe I misunderstood the article. I took it to mean get the Thai's them selves to tour Thailand.

I would like to see them reach out to the common working man in Russia China and India as well as the western world. The ones who have to save for a couple of years to take their family on an exotic trip to Thailand. Maybe exotic is the wrong word. But for the average family coming from the western world I think it would seem to be exotic to them.smile.png
