Info on Buriram.

Does Ray (?) still have his place in Prakhon Chai?

No, he sold it to another farang a long time ago

I sold Coffee Corner to Steve and Aun about a year ago. It is now called My Corner and they have their own website. Not sure if I can quote this - http://www.stevescoffeecorner.com/Home.html

Steve is a Mexican/American and I can highly recommend the Mexican food additions to the menu - Wet Burritos are my favourite.

There is now plenty of choice in Buriram city and Buriram province for any visitor who wants a change from Thai food.

Quite frankly Buriram itself hasn't got much going for it. Typical dusty regional provincial centre. If you're thinking of staying for a longer term you might like to consider Prakhonchai (40kms South) or Bankruad (60kms South) rentals cheaper than Buriram City. Plenty of rental properties available e,g, 2 story, 3bdm house (no a/c) 2,500 - 3,000 bht month.

Barry, that is a slightly myopic view that I think Khun Newin would dispute.

I would be interested to see your pro's and con's list for Ban Kruat vs Buriram City.

rgs,

I'm sure your posts are from concern about my safety. I'm sure over a pint of beer you'd get to know me and know I'm no mug. (no pun intended)

But you are correct that I have a lot to learn about Thailand. Maybe we got off on the wrong foot wink.png

In the UK I run a forum, much smaller than this one, about China.

I give the same advise to others about the pitfalls, scams, women, customs, cultures and Visa requirements for China and the UK.

I don't profess to be an expert, but I try to help others with my knowledge and experience.

I joined this forum for the same advice about Thailand.

I've already done a lot of research on Thailand, I have an English friend who lives in RoiEt, but one can ever know everything about another Country.

Will I make mistakes.......you bet, who hasn't!

Thanks for the travel advice, I'll ask more in the appropriate forum, but basically I'll be taking a 3 week vacation in October.

I'll be taking a flight to BKK, then my thought was to shuttle over to 'Don Muang' and catch a Nok Air flight to RoiEt where I'll meet my friend.

After a few days I'll catch a local bus to Buriram.

She hasn't invited me to her home and I certainly wouldn't stay in it anyway. I'll look for a nearby hotel.

I told her I was visiting my friend in RoiEt and would pop down to meet her.

Nothings in concrete about where or who I'll live with.

As for income. £40K (1,880,000 baht) savings and monthly income of £800 (37,600 baht) initially, rising to £1,600 (75,200 baht) later.

I prefer to keep my home in the UK as a security.

The Thai locals in RoiEt regard Buriram as a decent place to live and thanks to a few PM's I've been given a lot of local knowledge and good advice on the area.

If I get time I'll visit Phetchabun and Chanthaburi which rgs recommended.

One word of advice - best not to throw income/asset figures around on an internet forum, or in front of the Thais.

Yup, too many ex-Bank Managers around here!

Hi Cardholder,

I only quoted my income after reading other topics of the 'rich' brigade stating it's impossible to live in Thailand on less than 50K baht a month.

I expected to be shot down.

However thanks to some personal PM's and information about Buriram, including my own research on property rentals in the area, it only confirms my thoughts that I could lead a nice and simple lifestyle in Thailand, but your advice is appreciated.

The best advice I received, when I found myself with a relationship opportunity (that I had not been actively seeking), was from a seasoned Thailand veteran. He said "Jump in, the water's warm".

You can debate your situation until the cows come home but, at the end of the day, it takes a leap of faith to get off the plane and head for uncharted territory.

Don't think too much, just do it. Don't try and over-prepare just arrive with an open-mind and soak up your experience. You will soon find whether it is for you or not.

Talk down finances rather than up - the Thais measure virtually everything by money. Giving an air of adequate financial standing is quite sufficient. No need to be frugal but avoid being too flambuoyant with your expenditure.
