Advice with LG DVD Rx System (Surround Sound)

Featured Replies

Good morning,

I would be very grateful to any TV members if they could share their experiences with a problem I am having with my LG HT554TM DVD Rx System (Surround Sound system).

The system was bought new approx 2 years ago (out of warranty now) and at the beginning of this year while watching a movie either through the DVD or USB, the system would unexpectedly shutdown/turn itself off (Note: the shutoff-timer is not enabled). On going to turn it back on either at the power button on the box itself or via the remote, it will not allow me to turn it back on and sometimes I have to wait a few seconds or even a few minutes before it will allow me to turn it on again. When this problem initally started, it would only do this the once and then I could watch movies for hours after with no reoccurance, however now the problem has gotten worse and it happens more frequently usually every 20 minutes to hour (very random).

I have tried to isolate one or 2 things such as removing the remote from view, cooling the system more with external fan etc but to no avail.

I was initally thinking this could be an internal heat problem but my room is usually at a 'normal' temperature i.e. cool from aircon and the system would sometimes shutoff after only 10-20 mins. I have left this into the service center and am told that they can't find anything wrong with this but knowing there is definately a problem as it happens everytime I was wondering if anyone had similar problems? Im now leaning towards perhaps a bad solder / internal electronics.

Many Thanks in advance for any help....and if worst comes to worst any suggestions for new (reliable) system would also be gratefully received as my knowledge in home entertainment systems are limited!

You said it happens every 20 minutes to an hour and the service centre can find nothing wrong?

Either they aren't waiting or it's something else - how's your power supply?

Thanks for reply.

Power supply (presumably mains?) is good as Im running PS3 off same 4-way adapter with no probs and have tried different sockets etc. The LG box (DVD player) just turns itself off i.e. goes into standby mode and then when you press power button nothing happens for a while.....and then after several attempts it will switch on again...i.e. there is power getting to the box OK (standby light is on constantly) but wont switch on for a while...

Awaiting news from service centre as I explained in more detail what was happening....

Many Thanks

Do any of the speakers sound distorted or scratchy before it shuts off? Could be a faulty speaker driver with a partial short circuit causing it to go into protection.
